Lenguaje inclusivo y

neutro en español
Javier Muñoz-Díaz
Español inclusivo y neutro 1
• Spanish inclusive & gender-neutral language concerns nouns,
pronouns, articles, and adjectives that have binary gendered endings
such as “o” (masculine) or “a” (feminine). However, it doesn’t apply to
verbs.
• Here are some examples of gendered language in Spanish:
• Los latinos son muy buenos e inteligentes.
(Latinos are very good and intelligent people)
• Las latinas son muy buenas e inteligentes.
(Latinas are very good and intelligent)
• Nosotros somos muy buenos e inteligentes.
(We are very good and intelligent people)

• To addressed the gendered language, some people use “a/o”, “@”, and
“x” in writing

• Nosotras/os, las/os latinas/os, somos muy buenas/os.

• Nosotr@s, l@s latin@s, somos muy buen@s.
• Nosotrxs, lxs latinxs, somos muy buenxs.

• However, these phrases are hard to pronounce in Spanish

Español inclusivo y neutro 3
• Other people propose to employ the ending “e” to refer to non-
conforming and non-binary people

• Nosotres, les latines, somos buenes e inteligentes.

• Regarding nouns ending with “e” or even “a,” they could be used if
they do not imply binary gender identities.

• La gente es buena. (The people are good)

• Las personas son buenas. (People are good)
