     Incisors: bite off pieces of food small enough to
    chew
     Canines: do not have a significant function in
    humans
     Premolars and molars: grind food into smaller
    and smaller pieces
    Oesophagus

     Tube made of muscle that


    forces food down to
    stomach through
    peristalsis

     Peristalsis:
    wave-like
    muscle contractions that
    move food from
    oesophagus to the stomach
    Stomach
     stores food for ~ 3 hours
    while stomach acid
    (gastric juice) begins to
    chemically digest food

     has muscular walls which


    allow it to contract and
    relax causing food to
    churn to better break it
    down into nutrients –
    mechanical digestion
