Doshi

B V Doshi is one of India's greatest architects. The first Indian to receive the
prestigious Pritzker Architecture Prize and is also a recipient of Padma Shri
and Padma Bhusan.

He had worked closely with architectural legends such as Le Corbusier,


Anant Raje and Louis Kahn. He also received the famous OAL or Ordre des
Arts et des Lettres of France for his exemplary works. His studio was called
"Vastu-Shilpa" in Delhi and was a Brutalist and Modernist architecture
pioneer in India.

2) Laurie Baker
The Gandhi of Architecture, Laurie Baker, is known to be one of the most
famous architects in India. The legendary architect was known for his
unique style of combining low-cost materials and regional practices to craft
organic buildings that blended seamlessly into the background.

He mostly worked for low to middle class households, creating marvels out
of the traditional raw materials. He has been awarded Padma Shri, MBE,
UN Roll of Honor etc.

3) Sheila Sri Prakash


Sheila Sri Prakash is a multitalented veteran among Indian architects. She
was the first Indian woman to start her own architectural practice in the
country.

With over 1200 projects to her name, she is considered one of the most
influential female architects in the globe.

4) Brinda Somaya

Brinda Somaya is known for astounding vernacular architecture. The only


woman to ever win a Wienerberger Golden Architect Lifetime Award,
Brinda Somaya started the foundation of her firm at her own backyard. She
is also popular as an urban conservationist.

5) Charles Correa

Charles Correa is perhaps one of the most famous architects in Modern


India. He is known for introducing modern and post-modern architectural
marvels to the post-independent India. His oeuvre consists of a wide variety
from low-cost housing to high rise buildings. He received both Padma Shri
and Padma Vibhushan.

6) Chitra Vishwanath

Chitra Vishwanath is a Bangalore based Architect, who has blended ecology


and architecture to craft, amazing buildings all around India and the world.
She leads the reputed BIOME Environment Solutions Private Limited and
focuses on earthen architecture, and improved upon Laurie Baker's legacy.

7) Shimul Javeri Kadri

Shimul Javeri Kadri is yet another artist, who's considered to be one of the
best architects in India. Recipient of many awards including the reputed,
Prix Versailles, she embraces the school of architecture and design that
reflects the harmony of nature. She has conceptualized varied spaces and
buildings including hotels, museums, institutions and bungalows.

8) Hasmukh Patel

Hasmukh Patel is one of India's best-known


architects, who was an inevitable part of post-independence architecture
along with Charles Correa, Anant Raje, Achyut Kanvinde. His works became
the symbols of India's growth as a young and ambitious nation, and he was
also one of the major forces behind the growth of CEPT.

9) Piloo Mody

Piloo Mody is yet another famous architect in India. However, he was


known more for his political career. He was one of the founding members

10) Raj Rewal

Raj Rewal is one of the top architects in India, who has designed various

11) Achyut Kavinde

Achyut Kavinde is an uncomparable aesthete of Indian Architecture. He was


known for his functionalist elements and approaches. His love for blending

a great believer of Vastu Shastra. He was awarded the Padma Shri.

12) Bijoy Jain


Bijoy Jain is another famous Architect in India, who has garnered
international attention, through his exceptional projects. He is also a visiting
architecture professor at Yale University. His firm is called Studio Mumbai is
famed for it's aesthetic and out of the box concepts and designs.

13) Anant Raje

Anant Raje is yet another titan of Indian Architecture and design. A student
of Louis Khan, his works reflected the vernacular styles and also was a

14) Bimal Patel

One of the most sought after contemporary architects of our time, Bimal
Patel was born in Gujarat and is the President of CEPT. His exemplary works

also a recipient of Padma Shri.

16) Rahul Mehrotra

Rahul Mehrotra is considered one of the best Indian architects of our time.

17) Hafeez Contractor

Hafeez Contractor is known for designing skyscrapers and the three tallest
towers in India - 42 in Kolkata, Twin Towers of Imperial in Mumbai. He is a

into the field.
