Meaning of Life Oriented Curriculum:-

Life oriented curriculum is a curriculum


of the self in relation to other and to society. It
addresses skills, knowledge and values about the
self, the environment, responsible citizenship, a
healthy and protective life, social engagement,
recreation and physical activity, career choices.
Definition:-

Life oriented has been defined in the National


curriculum as a holistic study of the self, the self in
society, an opportunity to develop the emotional side of
young people , the citizenship aspects of life in South
Africa democracy, human rights it is actually a whole
conglomeration of many different things that contribute
to life orientation, not forgetting the health side, life
style, healthy living and physical fitness.
Field of Life Oriented Curriculum:-

According to Hilda taba,


 Taking care of health and personal life
 Nurturing a happy family.
 Leading a good life.
 Adopting spiritual values.
 Developing aesthetic skills.
 Living amicably with family members and society.
 Spending leisure time productively.
 Developing skills to improve one’s economic status.
Importance Features of Life Oriented
Curriculum:-
 Social transformation.
 Outcomes-based education.
 High level of knowledge and skills.
 Integration of subjects and applied competencies.
 Progression of knowledge and skills.
 Articulation and portability.
 Nurturing human rights, inclusivity, environmental care and
social justice.

Social Transformation:-

Social transformation in education is a concept


which aims at removing the social disparities in
education and ensuring that equal opportunities are
provided to all section of the society.
Outcomes – based Education:-

Outcomes -based education is the foundation for


Life Oriented Curriculum. It is an educational theory
that based each part of an educational system
around goals. By the end of the educational
experience each student should have achieved the
goal
Some of the educational achievements.
 Identifying problems and finding out suitable
solution, making appropriate decision using
critical and creative thinking.
 Working efficiently with other as members of
team, group organization and community.
High Level of Knowledge and Skills:-

 Lifeoriented curriculum tires to develop high of


knowledge and practical skills in leaners.
 Itindicates the higher goals to be achieved by
each students.
Integration of subject and Applied
competence:-
 Life oriented curriculum gives importance for the
integration within and across subject and discipline.
 Only integration subject and discipline applied
competence could be achieved.
Progression of knowledge and skills:-

By explicitly stating the expected learning


outcomes at each level of education, to achieve
advanced level to knowledge and skills could be
formulated. Life oriented curriculum follow such an
approach.
Articulation and Portability:-

Articulation refers to the relationship that


exists among the different parts of the curriculum
for a particular standard or grade. Arranging the
subjects content sequentially in such a way that
there exists significant, correlation between those
of a lower class or grade and of the next
articulation or continuity.
Nurturing human rights, inclusivity,
environmental care and social justice:-
Life oriented curriculum attempt to promote
human rights, inclusion of all section of the people,
care for the environment and upholding social
justice.
Valuing Indigenous Knowledge
systems:-
Nowadays people have started recognizing
different systems of knowledge and using them in
different aspects of Life and this trend is noticed all
over the world.
Credibility, Quality and Efficiency:-

Life oriented curriculum tires to incorporate necessary


changes from time to time thereby renewing itself and
making it comparable to those of other countries in quality,
breadth and depth.
Besides developing the skill needed for a day to day life
such as
 Information and communication skills.
 Inter-personal skills
 Skill of understanding the feelings of others.
 Creative thinking skills.
 Skill of critical thinking.
 Skill of making decisions.
 Problem solving skill.
 Skill of coping up with stress
 Controlling emotions.
Conclusion:-

Developing the special skills and knowledge in a


particular subject discipline and developing
occupational skill to become self reliant are the
important aspects of life oriented curriculum.
