1986
INTRODUCTION
 Environment Protection Act,1986 is an act
enforced by parliament of India for safeguarding
and improvement of environment.
 Inthe wake of Bhopal Gas Tragedy,1984 the
Government of India enacted this act under
article 253of the constitution.
 The act came into force on 19 November 1986.
 The act gives certain powers to the
Central Government to take measures
for the purpose of protecting and
improving the quality of the
environment and to prevent
environmental pollution . The act does
not have a separate official body at the
State level.
FUNCTIONS
Plan and execute nation wide
program for prevention, control or
reduction of environmental pollution.
Lay down standards for the quality of
environment in various aspects such
as the emission or discharge of
environmental pollutants.
 Prepare manuals, codes and guides
regarding prevention, control and
reduction of environmental
pollution.

Restrictions of areas for location of


industries.
Research and collection of data
relating to environmental pollution.
Establishment of environmental
laboratories.
 Lay down procedures and safeguards
for the prevention of accidents
which may cause environmental
pollution and remedial measures for
such accidents.

Examine manufacturing processes,


materials and substances which cause
pollution.
Safeguards for handling hazardous
substances.
POWERS
The Central Government have power to
inspection of any premises, industrial plants,
equipment, manufacturing, record, documents
or any other materials and giving directions to
authorities, officers or persons to take steps for
the prevention of environmental pollution.
The penalties such as imprisonment and fines
for those who failure to follow the rules under
this act.

 The Environment plays the most significant
role in the preservation and survival of
every life on the earth.
 The Environmental Protection Act 1986
represent the significant advancement in
the preservation and enhancement of the
environment by certain rules for
prevention, control and reduction of
environmental pollution.
