Robotics

Robot
 A robot is a machine that is programmed by a computer and
can do many complex actions.

 Robots are controlled by the eternal control device or within.

 Robots can be designed in human form or machine design.

 The word robot comes from the slavic word ‘robota’ which
means slave or servant.
Robots vs automatic machine
 The ability to carry out complex instructions automatically is
the key element of robotics.
 Machines like washing machine, microwave ,dishwasher also

carry out instructions automatically.

 How can you differentiate between a robot and an automatic

machine? Most robots use sensors, which help them adapt

their actions to the environment and Robots can be used in
any situation and for any purpose, but primarily they are used
in dangerous environments (like bomb detection and
deactivation), manufacturing processes. or where humans
cannot survive.
History of robots
 1954: The first industrial robot Unimate was designed by
George Devol. He coined the term Universal Automation. He
later shortened it to Unimation, which became the name of
the first robot company, in 1962.

 1978: The Programmable Universal Machine for Assembly

(PUMA) robot was developed by Unimation, with General
Motors' design support.
 1980s: By this era, the robot industry had entered a phase of
rapid growth. Many institutions introduced programs and
courses on robotics. These courses were spread across
various branches, such as mechanical engineering, electrical
engineering, and computer sciences.

 2003: NASA's twin robot geologists, the Mars Exploration

Rovers, were launched towards Mars on 10 June and 7 July, in
2003. They were sent in search of water on Mars. This
program was a long-term effort in the field of robotic
exploration of space.
Types of robots
 Simple Level Robots
◦ These robots are simple and cannot carry out complex tasks. They
support humans in their daily task. Eg: Washing machine.

 Middle Level Robots

◦ These robots once programmed cannot be reprogrammed and have
sensor-based circuits, which can perform multiple tasks. For example,
fully automatic washing machines.
 Complex Level Robots
◦ These robots can be programmed and reprogrammed easily. They have
complex model-basedcircuits. For example, laptops or computers.
Robotics
 Robotics is a branch of engineering that involves the
conception, design, manufacture and operation of robots.

 The objective of the robotics field is to create intelligent machines

that can assist humans in a variety of ways.
Artificial intelligence
Artificial intelligence (AI) refers to the simulation of human
intelligence in machines that are programmed to think like
humans and mimic their actions.
Examples of AI-Artificial Intelligence
 Google Maps and Ride-Hailing Applications
 Face Detection and recognition
 Text Editors and Autocorrect
 Chatbots
 E-Payments
 Search and Recommendation algorithms
 Digital Assistant
 Social media
 Healthcare
 Gaming
 Banking and Finance
 Smart Home devices
 Security and Surveillance
 Smart Speaker
 E-Commerce
 Smart Email Apps
 Music and Media Streaming Service
Robotics and Artificial IntelligenceRobotics
 Robotics and Artificial Intelligence are often confused to be
the same. However, they are totally different terms.
 One can say that Al is the brain while robotics is the body. It

deals with the development of robots and Al is the computer

science branch that helps in developing the software.

 Sophia is a social humanoid robot with the ability to display
more than 50 facial expressions .
 It was developed by a hong kong based company Hanson

Robotic.
 Sophia was activated on 19 April 2015 and made her first

public appearance on mid march 2016 in Austin ,Texas, united

states.
 With the granting of visa by Saudi Arabia in october

2017 ,sophia become the first robot to receive the citizenship

of any country in nov 2017.
 Who is the father of AI ?
John McCarthy
 Who is the First humanoid robot ?

Sophia
 Who is the developer of Whatsapp ?
 Meta platforms-brian acton jan koum
 Who is the founder of facebook?
 Mark zuckerburg
 Who is the founder of twitter?
 Evan Williams, Biz Stone, and Noah Glass.
 Who is the founder of instagram ?
 Kevin Systrom
 First female Robot 'Shalu' is developed by Dinesh Patel who hails from a very
small village, Rajmalpur, UP, and is a computer science teacher in Kendriya
Vidyalaya, IIT Bombay.
 The robot is made at home using waste materials [14] as well as aluminum,
plastic, cardboard, wood, newspapers, and other things readily available in
the local market.[15] No 3D-printed components are used and the cost is
low, around ₹ 50,000 Indian rupees ($710, €591).[16] Shalu's intelligent
software is designed and developed using open-source libraries like
TensorFlow, NLTK, etc.[5] by Patel. Work on the development of the next
version of the robot Shalu is currently in progress.
Application
 Application is a program that performs various task assigned
to it.

 Eg Whatsapp is cross messaging application that allows user

to communicate with one another.
1. Word processing software
2. Presentation software
3. Desktop publishing software- GIMP
GNU image manipulation program
4. Email software
5. Internet browser
6. Graphics program-pixel based and
vector based
7. Communication software
8. Database software
