Nutrients

In this lesson, we will identify

the functions and sources of
nutrients.
What are nutrients?
● Food helps the body grow, stay
warm, build and repair tissue, and
remain healthy.

● Eating healthful foods can

improve resistance to diseases and
help people recover faster from
illness and injuries.

● Food contains chemical

substances called nutrients that
help keep the body working as it
should.
SIX CATEGORIES
These chemicals
are classified into
six categories.
• Water
• Carbohydrates
• Proteins
• Fats
• Vitamins, and
• Minerals
WATER
● Water is a very important nutrient.
Water is the main ingredient in
blood. It also forms the juices of the
digestive system.
● Water helps a person urinate and
sweat.
● Mucus in the nose and throat
contains water.
● Tears are made of water.
● Joints need water to help them move
smoothly.
● Water can be drunk from a glass, or it
can be ingested through food.

CARBOHYDRATE

Carbohydrate is a major source of

energy. Some carbohydrates are
better for the body than others.
Carbohydrates

● White flour, sugar, candy and

many processed foods are not
very nutritious. The body
breaks them down quickly and
raises sugar levels in the blood
which can make people feel
irritable and nervous.
PROTEINS
Body needs proteins to
build and repair body
tissues like hair, fingernails,
and muscles. The nutrient
protein comes from animal
products such as eggs,
meat, poultry, fish, and
dairy, and from some plants
like whole grains, beans,
rice, and nuts.
Proteins
FATS ● Fats provide even more
energy for the body than
carbohydrates do; however,
the body only needs a small
amount of this nutrient
every day.
● Fats play an important role
in helping blood clot and in
helping the body absorb
certain vitamins better.
● Fat is stored in the body to
protect and cushion internal
organs and to protect
against extremes in
temperatures.
Fats
● There are healthful and
unhealthful fats.
● Animal fats (dairy products
and meats) are high in
unhealthful fats.
● Vegetable fats (in avocados,
olives, nuts, and some oils)
are rich in healthful fats.
