What is Masjid al-Aqsa
Masjid al-Aqsa
• Masjid al-Aqsa means the furthest mosque
• This was because at the time of the prophet (saw) it was the furthest
mosque from them
• Masjid al-Aqsa also got its name due to the night journey the prophet
(saw) performed
• Masjid al-Aqsa is the entire compound not just the dome of the rock
Baytul Maqdis
• Baytul Maqdis is one of the names of Masjid al-Aqsa
• Baytul Maqdis means the holy place
• It is the 3rd most holiest place in Islam
• It was the first qibla before the Ka’ba
Al Ardul Muqaddasah
• Al Ardul Muqaddasah means holy land
• It is one of the many names of Masjid al-Aqsa
Ardul Anbiyaa
• Ardul Anbiyaa means land of the prophets
• This is because every prophet from Adam (as) to Muhammad (saw)
prayed in Masjid al-Aqsa
Significance of Masjid as-Aqsa
• Masjid al-Aqsa and the area around it is important to all 3 Abrahamic
religions
• Judaism has its sacred Wailing or Western wall
• Christianity because its where they believe Jesus (Isa a.s) was crucified
• Islam because it’s the 3rd holiest place in Islam
