GENDER OF NOUNS
 Every French noun has “gender” –
masculine or feminine
 If “un” is before the noun-
masculine
 If “une” is before the noun -
feminine

 Un/Une -- mean “a” or “an”
 “salade” – feminine because “une”
precedes it

 “jus de pomme” – masculine

what PRECEDES it.

 The “96% Rule” refers to a way of
determining if a noun is masculine or
feminine
 Feminine nouns usually end in “e”, “ette”,
“ée”, “sion”, “tion”
 Masculine nouns usually end in a consonant
or a vowel other than “e”
 When in doubt… LOOK IT UP!!!!!!
“Des” = some
 “des” (pronounced DAY) is used with all
plural nouns to express the concept of
“some”
 Des frites - some fries
 Des biscuits – some cookies
 Plurals usually end in “s”
