Latent Heat
• Under certain conditions heat supplied to a system
may produce a change in phase, rather than a change
in temperature.
• Therefore :
Saturated Adiabatic Lapse Rate
(5)
Saturated Adiabatic Lapse Rate
Rearranging dT/dz in Eq.(5), yields :
(6)
we can write Eq.(6) as :
(7)
Saturated Adiabatic Lapse Rate
The magnitude of is not constant but depends on the
pressure and temperature.
(13) *
Intergrate Eq. (13), we get
(14)
We determine the constant when at low T, , hence :
(15)
Equivalent Potential Temperature
(15)
Rearrange Eq. (15)
(16)
LCL
Ascent followed by Descent
The effects of the saturated ascent coupled with the
adiabatic descent are:
• Net increases in the temperature and potential temperature of
the parcel
• A decrease in moisture content (as indicated by changes in the
mixing ratio, relative humidity, dew point and wet-bulb
temperature)
• No change in the equivalent potential temperature or wet-bulb
potential temperature, which are conserved quantities for air
parcels undergoing both dry and saturated
