Number Line Concept
• What was the theme of the party • Where was the party held?
• What was the number of friends who • Where was the magician hiding his magic box?
attended? • Where did you keep all the gifts that you received?
• What did you wear for the party?
• Why • How
• Why didn’t you invite your teachers for the • How did you reach the party venue?
party? • How was the food at the party?
• Why was your little cousin crying?
• All the WH questions
• Rearranging the questions – Para Introduction, 1, 2, conclusion to
make a cohesive narration
• 15 marks assignment
Introduction
• First of all make them recount the Numbers from 1 to 10
• Ask them if they know basic addition (1 +2 e.g. – the answer should
be yes ideally)
• Give him 3 problems each (addition & subtraction) each to solve
• 2+3=?
• 1+2=?
• 3 + 4 = ? etc
• Ask them “Would you like to SEE the addition happening
• Then introduce the concept with an analogy
• I will tell you about the Number line but you can imagine this like a Train line
• All the stops are Numbers
• Then imagine you are driving the train
• (This introduces the Fun element because the concept is entirely new)
Concept: Number Line
• Tell him the train can go from left to right or vice versa
• Let him move the tokens either way and ask
• Are the number increasing or decreasing
• Help him conclude about
• Increasing numbers when you go left to right &
• Decreasing numbers when you go right to left
Concept: Simple additions on the line
• Ask him to start the train from “2” (i.e. put the token at Number 2)
and drive 3 stations to the right
• Let him drive the train by either hopping the tokens or with discrete motions
of the tokens for each number travelled)
• Repeat for other addition sums
• Then ask him to tally with the answers that he solved earlier
• Explain the concept of addition on the Number line
• Start with the first number
• Then you move the stations equal to the second number – to your right / in
normal direction
Concept: Simple subtractions on the line
• Ask him to start the train from “5” (i.e. put the token at Number 5)
and drive 3 stations to the left
• Let him drive the train by either hopping the tokens or with discrete motions
of the tokens for each number travelled)
• Repeat for other subtaction sums
• Then ask him to tally with the answers that he solved earlier
• Explain the concept of Subtraction on the Number line
• Start with the first number
• Then you move the stations equal to the second number – to your left / in
reverse direction
Concept: Simple multiplications on the line
For 2 x 3 = 6
• Ask him to start the train from “2” (i.e. put the token at Number 2)
• Let him move the tokens “3” times hopping 2 numbers at a time
• Explain the concept of Multiplication on the Number line
