What is DNA
Fingerprinting
?
DNA fingerprinting is a technique originally
derived from the use in medical genetics of
polymorphisms, silent variations between
the genomes of different persons2.

HISTORY OF DNA
FINGERPRINTING
• DNA fingerprinting was developed in 1984
by Alec. J. Jeffrey at the University of
Leicester while he was studying the gene
for myoglobin4.

• In 1987, British Baker Colin Pitchfork was

the first criminal caught using DNA
fingerprinting4.

• In 1990, California established DNA

fingerprinting banks for sex offenders4.

DNA ELECTROPHORESIS
EXPERIMENT
• Electrophoresis is a
technique that can be used
to separate the DNA and
RNA fragments from one
another according to their
sizes5.

PARENTAGE TESTING
• DNA fingerprinting is widely used in
parentage testing around the world by
comparing different DNA sequences8.

• The test will be conducted using

Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR)
technology11.

• The results of parentage testing are known

in DNA fingerprinting divided into three
columns, there are Mother, Child, and
Father11.

FORENSIC SCIENCE
• The DNA of a criminal suspect can be
determined by using DNA fingerprinting
technology9.

• Scientists find the marker in a DNA sample

by designing probes of DNA that will each
seek out and bind to a complementary DNA
sequence in the sample9.

• Forensic scientists compare these DNA

profiles to determine the suspect with
evidence samples9.
