The Problem

The problem is with using fossil fuels to generate electricity to power everyday items.
Fossil Fuels are a limited resource on the Earth and when they are used they generate Carbon Dioxide
which causes climate change through the Greenhouse Effect .
The Solution

Instead we can use Solar energy which does not generate any type of pollution and is an unlimited
resource. Every day , the sun generates 173 thousand terawatts of energy which is over 100 times the
yearly consumption of the entire planet.
My Hypothesis
• A Hypothesis is educated guess or theory about what you believe to happen from an experiment .
• My Hypothesis is that we will be able to save electricity , that would otherwise be generated from fossil
fuels ( which are bad for the environment ) , and use renewable clean sources of energy to power street
lights.
How Do Solar Panels Work
?
• Solar Panels rely on the energy produced by the sun .
• Solar Panels are made from smaller solar cells , which are mostly
made from silicon ( a semiconductor , which is the 2 most abundant
element on earth )
• However , solar cells are very weak on their own , generating
around half a volt for each cell . You would need twelve solar cells
to charge your cell phone , which is why many solar fields have
thousands of solar panels.
How is Electricity Generated
from Solar Panels ?
In a solar Cells two conductive metals surround a crystalline structure of
silicon which consists of two different layers of silicon , one with extra
electrons , the other with less electrons .
Materials
 Cardboard
 Paper
 Wire
 LED
 Circuit Board
 Light Sensors ( LDR )
 Solar Panel
 Newspaper
 Glue
 Paint
 Batteries
 Battery Holder
Procedure
1. The first step is to get a piece of cardboard.
2. The next step is to mark the road and the apartment area.
3. Then we can paint it and make the apartment from paper.
4. After that we can make bushes and make the divider.
5. Then we have to make the streetlights with wires going into them.
6. We have to attach LED’s to the wires and the wires to a circuit board.
7. The sensor will detect when it is light or dark and is on the circuit board.
8. The solar panels will charge a battery that is connected to the circuit board.
