Moderate:

 When the disability effects the normal function to be

reasonable level and the person with disability

performs a specific work in a large period of time or

he/she learn the skills after considerable wastage of the

time

 Then disability is said to be moderate nature

 For example 50% to 75% eyes problems

 Ears problems

 Shortness of limbs

 Speech problems

 A moderate cognitive disability is intellectual

functioning that is considerably below average and that

occurs concurrently with significant deficits in adaptive

behaviour

 For Example how individuals adapt to environmental

demands compared to others of the same age

 About 10 percent of the mentally retarded population

is considered moderately retarded

 Moderately retarded individuals have IQ scores

ranging from 35 to 55

 They can carry out work and self-care tasks with

moderate supervision

 They typically acquire communication skills in

childhood and are able to live and function successfully

within the community in a supervised environment

such as a group and home

Symptoms of Moderate Disabilities:

 Slow in understanding and using language

 May have some difficulties with communication

 Can learn basic reading, writing and counting skills

 Generally unable to live alone

 Often get around on their own to familiar places

 Can take part in various types of social activities

 Able to learn basic health and safety skills

 Can complete self-care activities

 Generally having an IQ range of 35 to 49

Severe:

 When the disability effects the specific function to be

major level and the individual is not in in position to

function normally or he/she has to use some specific

device for learning or function which is not possible

for her/him to function properly

 Then the people with this disability is said to be

severe disability

 For example absence of limbs

 Absence of internal organs

 About 3 to 4 percent of the mentally retarded

population is severely retarded


 Severely retarded individuals have IQ scores of 20 to
40

 They may master very basic self-care skills and some

communication skills

 They cannot perform all self-care activities

independently

 They need daily supervision and support

 Noticeable motor impairment

 Severe damage

 Abnormal development

 Central nervous system

 Generally having an IQ range of 20 to 34

 Little ability to communicate

 Able to learn daily routines

 May learn very simple self-care

Profound:

 People with profound intellectual disability require 24

hour support and care

 They depend on others for all aspects of day-to-day

life and have very limited communication ability

 Frequently people in this category have other physical

limitations as well

 About 1 to 2 percent of people with intellectual

disabilities fall into this category


 Profoundly retarded individuals have IQ scores under
20 to 25
 They may be able to develop basic self-care and
communication skills with appropriate support and
training

 Their retardation is often caused by an associated

neurological disorder

 The profoundly retarded need a high level of structure

and supervision

 Persons with profound intellectual disability often

 They require close supervision and help with self-care

activities

 They have very limited ability to communicate

 They often have physical limitations

Symptoms of Profound Disabilities:

 IQ less than 20

 Significant developmental delays in all areas

 Noticeable physical and congenital abnormalities

 Requires close supervision

 Requires attendant to help in self-care activities

 May respond to physical and social activities

 Not capable of independent living

 Inability to understand with requests or instructions

 Very basic nonverbal communication

 Inability to care for their own needs independently

Treatment for Intellectual Disability(Mild, Moderate, Severe & Profound)

 Your child will probably need continuing treatment to

help them handle with their disability

 You will get a family service plan that describes your

child’s needs

 Your family needs will also be addressed in the plan
