DEFINITION

• Rheumatoid Arthritis is defined as a widespread,chronic


and inflammatory disease which affects the joints and
other organ system .
• In Rheumatoid arthritis the synovial membrane may
invade the joint space and the whole joint becomes
swollen and painful on movement.
EPIDEMIOLOGY
 The annual incidence of rheumatoid arthritis has been reported to be 40 per
100,000 .
Common disease having a peak incidence in the 3rd & 4th decades of life , with
3-5 high preponderance in females than in males .
The prevalance of RA in India is quiet similar to that reported from the
developing countries and is higher about 7 million patients in India .
 Approximately about 2 million Americans are affected by rheumatoid
arthritis .

SIGN AND SYMPTOMS
• Fatigue.
• Joint pain.
• Inflammation of joint
• Weight loss
• Joint swelling.
• Joint redness.
• Joint warmth.
• Joint stiffness.
• Loss of joint range of motion.
• Loss of appetite
PATHOPHYSIOLOGY

It is an autoimmune disease. It is influenced by body


immunesystem reaction towards certain body proteins. As they
are foreign substances (antigens) and produce antibodies. It
has been observed that patient’s body considers human
gamma globuin (Igt) as the antigen and produces antibodies for
that rheumatoid factor. Ig M,Ig A, IgG are called as IgM
rheumatoid factor, IgA rheumatoid factor.
• Antigen reacts with antibody to form an immune complex
which then reacts with complement (proteins) and leads to
inflammation.
PATIENT COUNSELLING

o Stay active always (exercise).


o Take the medications properly at correct time , dose as no
miracle cures will happen for RA .
o Do regular blood parameter monitoring .
o You should avoid food like fried & processed foods ,
AGE’s (heated,grilled foods) , sugar & refined carbs ,
dairy products , salt & preservatives , corn-oil etc .
o Eat more omega-3 foods (tuna , salmon , sardines ), egg ,
vitamin-D fortified milk products , organically grown
fruits and vegetables & extra-virgin oil .

PHARMACOLOGICAL TREATMENT

• There are three types of medications used to treat RA:


1. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).
2. Disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs(DMARDS).
3. Corticosteroids
