Luminous and Non-luminous Objects

3
Luminous Objects

Anything which emits light of its own is a

luminous object

Example- Sun, Bulb, etc.

4
Non-Luminous Objects
Objects that do not emit their own light are called
Non-luminous objects.

We see Non-Luminous objects by the light reflected

from them.

Example- Trees, Moon, etc.

5
Transparent, Translucent
and Opaque Objects

6
Transparent Objects
Objects that allow the light to pass through them are
called Transparent Objects.

Example- Water, Diamond

7
Translucent Objects
Objects that allow some light to pass through them, but
not enough to help you see through them clearly are
called Translucent Objects.

Example- Sunglasses, Tinted windows, etc.

8
Opaque Objects
Objects that do not allow light to pass through them are
called opaque objects.

Example- stone, wood, etc.

Shadow

14
Shadow
A shadow is a dark space behind an opaque object
where light is blocked by the object.

When an opaque object is placed in the path of

light, it stops light from passing through.

15
Factors affecting Shadow
 The size of the shadow changes with the
distance between the light source and the object.
 As the distance between the light source and
object increases, the shadow becomes smaller.
 As the distance between the object and the
screen increases, the shadow becomes larger.
 The shape and size of the shadow depend on the
angle between the light source and the object.

16
Reflection and
Mirrors

17
Reflection
When light falls on a surface, a part of it bounces
off. This change the direction of the light. The
bouncing off of light at a surface is called
Reflection

All the surfaces reflect light. But polished surfaces

like metal reflect light better then others.
