Thermal Power

here you can add your subtitle.

Thermal power
• Most of the electricity in Pakistan is produced by thermal power plant which took the lead
in 1988-89, and in 2011-12, generated about 70 Percent of the total energy output.
Previously hydel plants were the largest source of energy. Unlike the hydel plants which
are concentrated in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and northern Punjab, the thermal plants are
well distributed throughout the country.
• The main centre for the production of thermal power in Sindh is Karachi. Other important
thermal stations in Sindh are located at Kotri, Hyderabad. Sukkur, and Guddu. Large
thermal plants in Punjab have been installed at Rawalpindi, Lahore, Faisalabad, Multan,

and Kot Addu. In Balochistan, the thermal plants are located at Quetta, Pasni, and Hub.

Disadvantages
Thermal power in Pakistan is produced from oil, gas, and coal, and there are more disadvantages
than advantages to their use. The main advantage is that Pakistan has rich reserves of natural gas; the
problem is that these are being fast depleted.
Disadvantages
The sources of thermal power cause pollution. Coal is the largest polluter, followed by oil and
gas.
Pakistan is deficient in oil and has to import it. Oil is most needed by transport particularly air
transport. Therefore, electricity generated by oil becomes very costly
Coal produced in Pakistan is of inferior quality. Some good quality coal is imported due to
which the cost of consumption rises.

• All the three sources of thermal power (coal, oil, and gas) are non-renewable. They will be
exhausted within measurable time.
