Project Name and Code Number and Status of
Activities
Ongoing
Project 1:- Demonstration and Pre
Scaling up of Agricultural Technologies
4
(Code=62-01)
Activity 1. Aquaculture Technology Transfer through
Farmer Based Fish Fingerling Multiplication ( Code-
62-01-94)

Objectives:-
• To transfer fish seed (fish fingerling) technologies to fisher
farmers in a way that solves their current problems
• To assess (measure) the effectiveness (success) of improved
aquaculture technologies through fish fingerling multiplication in
NFALRC intervention areas.
Duration:- 2010-2012 (3 years)

Location:- South West Shoa Zone (Wonchi and Woliso )

Debrebirhan and Other NFALRC Intervention Areas

Center:- NFALRC

Responsible Persons at center level :- Yared M., Mesay Y

(Dr)., Eyob B, Getnet W and Esayas A?.
Summary of the Research Progress
• Actors for fish fingerling multiplication have been Identified
• Data collection instrument prepared and assessment of
technology transfer in areas where fingerling multiplication
started and begins the next month.
Activity 2. Aquaculture Technology Transfer through
Community Based Fish Feed Development ( Code- 62-01-
95)

Objectives:-
 To transfer fish feed technologies to fisher farmers in a way that
solves their current problems
 To measure the effectiveness (success) of improved aquaculture
technology transfer through the development of fish feed in the
study areas.
Summary of the Research Progress
• 4 Farmers for fish feed preparation have been selected for the
time being
• Identification of alternative fish feed sources in underway
• Data collected from factories producing wheat bran, brewery
waste (Spent Grain) and nug cake have been assessed as a
potential input supplier for the preparation of Sebeta I fish feed.
• Opportunities for community based fish feed development
(Sebeta I) has been assessed and analysis is underway
An overview of feed input producing factories
Challenges
Unable to easily access data on the aforementioned industrial by
products

The presence of few number of oil refineries using Nug solely as

their input
Way Forward
• Establishing a platform of actors supplying these industrial
by products to farmers/fish feed processors.
• Networking these suppliers to farmers or fish feed
processors through a market linkage following value chain
approach
• Measuring the extent of technology transfer to the end
users (fish farmers) or feed processing firms
Activity 3. Women’s Empowerment through Market Linked
Fishing net Making (Code- 62-01-96)

Objectives:-
 To create and facilitate market based linkage between Sebeta
women’s cooperatives and capture fishery or aquaculture sites in
their vicinities and elsewhere.
 To empower women’s cooperatives of Sebeta town in economic,
social and food security terms.
 To analyze the status women’s empowerment gained as a result of
the intervention.
Duration:- 2010-2012 (3 years)

Location:- South West Shoa Zone (Gilgel Gibe and Sebeta)

Center:- NFALRC

Responsible Persons at center level :- Yared M., Mesay Y (Dr).,

Eyob B, and Yared T.
Status of the Activity
• Training on Fishing net making has already been given for
8 trainees
• Resourcing, organizing, business incubation and data collection
activities are yet to be done.
Challenges
• Unable to find multiple input suppliers for fishing net
making (Only One is found???)
Way Forward
• Empowering the trainees through business incubation and
effective market linkage
• Measuring the extent of empowerment achieved as a result
of the intervention
Activity 4.
Demonstration of Aquaculture Technologies “by Establishing Far
mers’ Research Group” in South west and West Shewa Zones of O
romia

Objectives:-
 Create awareness on fish and fish farming activities
 Demonstrate the growth performance of mono-sex tilapia on
selected farmers’ ponds (convincing)
 To demonstrate the preparation of Fish Feed (S1)
 Understand their perception on aquaculture and related technologies
Duration:- 2010-2012 (3 years)

Location:- South West and West Shewa Zone

Center:- NFALRC

Responsible Persons at center level :- Yared M., Mesay Y.,

Eyob B., and Getnet W. and Abelneh Y ??
Summary of Research Progress
• Checklist for collecting data for the demo activity has been
prepared
• Technologies suited for the demonstration have been
selected (Fish feed, Monosex tilapia and Pond Management
Techniques)
Challenges
• None
Way Forward
Demonstrate the output of using monosex tilapia as an
aquaculture technology for better growth performance vis a
vis the mixed sex types

Demonstrating the output of using formulated fish feed on the

growth performance of Nile Tilapia

Filing the Gap in Farmers’ Understanding of the overall pond
