Objective

Discuss the composition of intracellular and

extracellular fluid
overview
of body
fluid
overview of
body fluid
The intracellular
fluid is the fluid
contained within
cells.
What is intracellular fluid composed of?

The cytosol or intracellular fluid consists mostly of

water, dissolved ions, small molecules, and large,
water-soluble molecules (such as proteins). Enzymes in
the cytosol are important for cellular metabolism. The
extracellular fluid is mainly cations and anions
What is example of intracellular fluid?

• Intracellular fluid examples of electrolytes are varied and can depend

on where the cell is found in the body. By far the most important, or
main, electrolyte found in intracellular fluid is potassium.

Because potassium plays a vital role in the maintenance of

normal cell functions
extracellular
fluid

in biology, body fluid that is not

contained in cells. It is found in
blood, in lymph, in body
cavities lined with serous
(moisture-exuding) membrane,
in the cavities and channels of
the brain and spinal cord, and
in muscular and other body
tissues

Summary

The body's fluid separates into two main compartments: Intracellular fluid

volume (ICFV) and extracellular fluid volume (ECFV).
