Now we will tell you about Ruakin Bond’s poem
‘GRANNY’S TREE CLIMBING’.

My grandmother was a genius. You’d like to know why?

Because she could climb trees.Spreading or high,
She’d be up their branches in the trice. And mind you,
When last she climbed a tree, she was sixty-two.
Ever since childhood, she’d had this gift
For being in a tree than in a lift ;
And through, as years went by, she would be told
That climbing trees should stop when one grew old
And that growing old should be gone about gracefully,
She’d laugh and say, ‘Well,I’LL grow old disgracefully.
I can do it better.’ And we had to agree;
For in all the garden there wasn’t a tree
She hadn’t been up, at one time or another
(Having leared to climb from a loving brouther
When she was six) but it was feared by all
That one day she’d have a terrible fall.
The out cotcome was different while we were in town
She climbed a tree and couldn’t come down!
We went to the rescue, and then the doctor took
Granny’s temperature and said,
‘I strongly recommend a quiet week in bed.’
We singhed with relief and tucked her up well.
Poor Granny! For her, it was like a brief season in hell,
Confined to her bedroom, while every breeze
Whispered of summer and dancing leaves.
But she held her peace till she felt stronger,
Then sat up and said, ‘I’ lie here no longer!’
And she called for my father and told him undaunted
That a house in a tree-top was what she now wanted.
My Dad knew his duties. He said ‘ That’s all right-
You’ll have what you want, dear.I’II start work tonight.
With my expert assistance,he soon finished the chore:
Made her a tree-house with windows and a door.
So Granny moved up, and now every day
I climb to her room with glasses and and a try.
She sits there in state and drinks sherry with me,
Upholding her right to reside in a tree.
SUMMARY
"Granny's Tree Climbing" is a delightful poem by Ruskin Bond that pays
homage to the poet's extraordinary grandmother and her remarkable
ability to climb trees, even at the age of sixty-two. The poem unfolds with
admiration and humor, showcasing Granny's unique talent and her
unyielding spirit. From her childhood, Granny possessed an inherent gift for
finding immense happiness and contentment while perched up in the
branches of a tree, surpassing the joy she could experience in an elevator.
As the years passed and society's expectations dictated that she should
relinquish her tree-climbing pursuits and gracefully embrace old age,
Granny defied the norms with a mischievous grin, declaring that she would
age disgracefully and continue doing what brought her joy. The poet and
his family, witnessing Granny's unwavering passion for tree climbing,
wholeheartedly agreed. While everyone feared that one day her tree-
climbing adventures might end in a disastrous fall, fate had a different plan
in store. One day, when the family was away, Granny decided to conquer a
tree but found herself unable to descend. Prompted by concern, they
rushed to her rescue, and a doctor was called to attend to her. After
examining Granny, the doctor prescribed a week of rest in bed
SUMMARY
. The family breathed a sigh of relief, believing that Granny's tree-climbing days
were finally behind her. However, Granny's spirit refused to be contained
within the confines of a bedroom. Enduring her temporary imprisonment, she
awaited the return of her strength. And when the time was right, she boldly
announced her desire to have a house built in a tree. Fearless and undeterred,
Granny shared her vision with her father, who fully understood his duty to
support her dreams. Reassuring her that she would have what she wanted, he
pledged to start working on the treehouse that very night. With the assistance
of the poet, Granny's father completed the task at hand, creating a treehouse
complete with windows and a door—a sanctuary where Granny could find
solace and joy amidst the branches. In this newfound abode, Granny
flourished, finding a renewed sense of freedom and connection to nature. And
every day, the poet joyfully climbed up to her room, bringing her glasses and a
tray, as they shared moments of companionship and indulged in sherry
together.
