Introduction
• Multimeter is an electronic measuring instrument that combines
several measurement functions in one unit. That’s why it is called
Multimeter.
• A most common tool to check the vehicle electrical systems.
• A typical multimeter can measure :
• Voltage (Volts - V)
• Resistance (Ohms - Ω)
• Current (Amperes - A)
• Continuity

Types of Multimeter

Analogue Multimeter Digital Multimeter

• Multimeter described in this module is digital, which is the most common type
used in the workshops.

Precautions before Use
• Right probe into the right Jack.
• Black wire will always go into the jack named “COM”.
• Red probe will go into the jack VΩmA, if we are measuring Voltage/ Resistance or
checking Continuity or check current if it is in milli amperes.
• And red probe will go into the jack 10ADC, if we are measuring Currents with high
rating but less than 10 Amperes.

*Note : If red probe inserted wrongly by mistake, it can blow the fuse inside the multimeter.

Precautions before Use
• Always select the parameter (Voltage/ Resistance/ Continuity or Current) carefully
before start taking measurements.
• For selection of correct parameter, Look for the symbols

Precautions before Use
• Selection of correct range for given Parameter.
• Select the range according to the standard values. If standard value is not known,
start from the highest available value.

Measuring Voltage
• Voltage is always measured with multimeter probes connected in parallel to the
circuit.
• Hence, connect Red Probe of multimeter to positive terminal and black probe to
negative terminal in a circuit.
• Voltage can be checked in Live circuits only.

Measuring Current
• Current is always measured with multimeter probes connected in Series to the
circuit.
• Hence, connect Red Probe of multimeter to negative terminal of one component
and black probe to negative terminal of other component to check the amount of
current flowing between two components.
• Current can also be checked in Live circuits only.

Measuring Resistance
 Resistance is measured for different coils to check the condition of the coil. For
example: Pulsar Coil, Ignition Coil, Stater Coil and Noise Suppressor Cap
 Resistance can be measured by selecting correct range in multimeter and
connecting the multimeter probes to the two different ends of coil.
 Resistance should be checked in dead circuits only.

Checking Continuity
• To check continuity on a run of wiring, disconnect both ends of the wire.
• Set your multimeter to check continuity with a tone.
• Put one probe on one end of the wire and the other probe on the opposite end of
the wire. The multimeter signals a tone and shows near zero ohms of resistance if
the wire has continuity.

How to check Battery Voltage
• Set the multimeter for DC Voltage at 20 Volts.
• Put red probe on positive terminal of the battery and black probe on the negative
terminal.
• Multimeter will display the Battery Voltage on the screen.

How to check Stator Coil
• Set the multimeter for Resistance at 200 Ohms.
• Put red probe on White wire coming out of stator and black probe on the green
wire.
• Multimeter will display the resistance value on screen.

How to check Ignition Coil (Primary)
• Set the multimeter for Resistance at 200 Ohms.
• Connect red probe of multimeter on one thimble of Ignition Coil and black probe
to other thimble of ignition coil.
• Multimeter will display the Resistance value on the screen.

How to check Ignition Coil (Secondary)
• Set the multimeter for Resistance at 20k Ohms.
• Connect red probe of multimeter on the thimble where the green wire is
connected and black probe to the open end of HT lead.
• Multimeter will display the Resistance value on the screen.

How to check Pulsar Coil
• Set the multimeter for Resistance at 2000 Ohms.
• Connect red probe of multimeter on Blue/Yellow wire and black probe on the
Green wire.
• Multimeter will display the Resistance value on the screen.

How to check Peak Voltage of Pulsar Coil
• Connect the Peak Voltage adaptor with the multimeter. Set the multimeter for voltage at
20 Volts
• Connect red probe of peak voltage adaptor on Blue/Yellow wire and black probe on the
Green wire.
• Crank the engine and multimeter will display peak voltage value on the screen. Peak
Voltage should be more than 1.5 Volts.

How to check Battery Charging Voltage
• Set the multimeter for
Voltage at 20 Volts.
• Connect red probe of
multimeter on positive
terminal of Battery and
black probe on negative
terminal of battery.
• Start the vehicle and rev
up to 5000 rpm, check
for the battery voltage,
should not exceeding
the 14.5V.

How to check Current Drain from Battery
• Set the Red probe and
multimeter for Current
measurement.
• Disconnect the green
wire from the negative
terminal of battery.
• Connect red probe of
multimeter on Green
wire and black probe on
the negative terminal of
battery.
• It should be zero value
on screen while the
ignition switch is off.
