• NGOs have been defined by world bank as “private organizations that pursue activities to relieve
suffering, promote the interests of the poor, protect the environment, provide basic social services
or undertake community development”.

• NGOs are contributing in fund raising, human resource development, capacity building, generation
and utilization of knowledge, resource mobilization and research activities pertaining to public
health.

CROSS
• The red cross is a non-political non-official international humanitarian
organization devoted to the service of mankind in peace and war.
Functions:
 Helping people during war and respond to disaster in conflict zones.
 Addressing sexual violence
 Building respect for law
 Economic security
 Enabling people with disability
 Helping detainee, humanitarian diplomacy
 Restoring family link, health care in danger.

THE ROCKEFELLER FOUNDATION
• It is a philanthropic organization with a purpose of promoting well being of mankind throughout the world.
Functions:
 In medical, health and population sciences: providing grants-in-aid for development of teachers and research workers
 Agricultural and natural sciences
 Social disciplines
 International relationships
 It provides assistance to research institutes such as the AIIMS
 Funding for enhancement of farming, family planning and establishment of training and teaching centres including
medical teaching in rural areas.
WHO
• It is a multilateral agency, jointly work with the system of United Nation to achieve
national priorities and improving health outcome.
• The WHO is responsible for conducting worldwide health surveys.
• It prepares world health report.

 Objective: The prime objective of the WHO shall be the attainment by all peoples
of the highest possible level of health.
• Member states: 194
• Headquarters: Geneva
• Country offices: 150
• Staff: more than 7000
• More than 700 institutions are supporting WHO’s work
• UN agencies, donors, foundations, NGOs and the private sector has close relationship with WHO.

THE WORLD HEALTH ASSEMBLY
• Delegates representing from all the member states are part of health assembly

• Functions:
 It is the governing body
 Determines all the policies of organization
 Appointment of director-general
EXECUTIVE BOARD
• Consists of 34 members
• Tenure of members is 3 years
Functions:
 Execute the policies and decisions taken by health assembly
 To accomplish the functions assigned by health assembly
 Submission of plans and programs to health assembly
 To make agenda of summits of health assembly
 To take urgent measures within the functions and financial resources of the
organization to deal with events which necessitate immediate action.
THE SECRETARIAT
• It comprises of technical and administrative staff
• Director general is head of the secretariat.
• Staff is appointed by director general.
Functions:
 To provide support to member states for planning national health programs
 Preparation of financial report and budget estimates of the organization.
