Sentences
Grade 6
What is a sentence?
A sentence is a group of words which make complete
sense.

For Example:

1. We shall not forget the happy times.

2. Who can describe the beauty of the moon?

3. Open the window.

4. The house is on fire!


There are four kinds of sentences
Assertive / Declarative Sentence
Sentences which make a statement or declare something are
called assertive or Declarative Sentences. They can either be
Affirmative or Negative.

For example:

1. There was heavy rain yesterday.

2. Slow and steady wins the race.

3. He spent a few days in Mumbai.


Interrogative Sentences

A sentence that asks a question is called an Interrogative


Sentence.

For Example:

1. Does the sun rise in the east?

2. What more can we do?

3. Who does not know the value of time?


Imperative Sentence

A sentence that expresses a command, a request, an entreaty (an


earnest request) or a desire (wish) is called an Imperative
Sentence.

For Example:

1. Open the window. (command)

2. Please lend me your text book. (request)

3. May God bless you. (wish)


Exclamatory Sentences

A sentence that expresses a strong or sudden feeling is called an


Exclamatory Sentence.

For Example:

1. What a beautiful day!

2. Alas! My friend is no more.

3. How kind of her to have rescued the street dog!


Please Remember:

Every Sentence begins with a capital letter


and ends with a full stop.

Interrogative sentence ends with a question


mark (?) and an exclamation mark is placed at
the end of an Exclamatory sentence (!).
Class Assignment

Identify which kind these sentences belong to:

1. None is greater than God.

2. Could you please take a message for me?

3. How beautiful the sky looks this morning !

4. Stop it.

5. I saw her waiting for the bus.

6. What are you planning to do?

7. Kindly do me a favour.

8. He enjoys playing cricket.

9. The children have submitted their assignment.

10. What a fantastic idea you have!
