KEY MOVES FOR LEADERS —
Advice from some Rotary Experts

BE CREDIBLE

• “We don’t follow people for very

long if we don’t believe they’re
credible,”.

• That means being dependable

• As president, you lead and motivate

your club, ensuring that club
members feel valuable, inspired, and
connected to each other.

• As president, you lead and motivate your club, ensuring that club members feel valuable, inspired,
and connected to each other.
• Club presidents plan and lead club meetings, set goals, encourage communication between club and
district committees, review expenditures, participate in decisions, and motivate club members. They
also collaborate with the district governor and assistant governor.
HOW TO PREPARE

• The year of planning before you take office is crucial to achieving the objectives you set out for
your club. As president-elect, you work with your assistant governor and incoming leadership
team to set annual goals that support your club’s strategic plan. In this year you should:
• Take online courses for club president in the Learning Center
• Assess your club’s strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and risks in order to set goals
• Develop an action plan for your annual goals, which support long-term achievements
• Appoint committee chairs
• Ensure continuity in leadership and service projects
• Attend presidents-elect training seminar
• Attend district training assembly

• Utilize the talents and backgrounds of members when forming a committee.
Usually the unofficial leader is the one with some experience in the program or
project.
PICK YOUR TEAM

• Include both new and more experienced members. Embracing diversity fosters
new ideas and approaches to conducting business. Let go of assumptions (and, in
some cases, unfair reputations) about fellow club members.
FIND A MENTOR
• Every new Rotarian should have a mentor.
• The purpose of mentoring is to tap into the existing knowledge,
skills, and experience of senior or high performing members and
transfer these skills to newer or less experienced members in order to
advance their personal and professional development.
• A mentor will share knowledge, skills, and life experience to guide
the new member; it is a journey of shared discovery.
BE A MENTOR

Keep that loop of constructive energy thrumming by encouraging the next

generation of leaders.
SHARE POWER
• Autocratic leaders struggle in the Round Table environment because members
can choose to exit the club at will or abscond from club duties.
BE WILLING TO LEARN
• Leadership requires that the leader is open to going out of their comfort zone.

• Acknowledge the efforts of others with a meeting shout-out, an emailed thank-
you message, or a cup of coffee in gratitude. Even small gestures pay dividends.
PUBLIC SPEAKING
• Public speaking is the number one fear for many people.
• As we learn and develop different speaking techniques, this benefits all areas of life,
helping restore an art that is being lost in this day and age of communicating online.
• 5 Essential, OBVIOUS, Basic Public Speaking Tips:

• Know your audience. ...
• Stand up straight. ...
• Get the words off your PowerPoint slides. ...
Show up with some energy.
