 SAP has come up with 1st version R/2 in 1970’s which is 2 tier architecture which consists of
D/B layer(any D/B) and presentation layer.
 SAP then introduced R/3 in 1992 which is 3 tier architecture which consists of D/B layer(any
D/B), application layer and presentation layer. SAP GUI is also introduced as a user interface.
IDOC’s and ALE are introduced to make better integration with other systems.
 Then in 2004 ECC was launched it is also a 3 tier architecture, where ECC is a center core
component integrating with CRM, SCM, APO, SRM products. Here ABAP technology, web
interface NWBC has been improved.
 In the year 2015 SAP moved from ECC to S/4 HANA. In S/4 HANA it has it’s own DB,
which is HANA DB also called in memory DB and this product can only work with HANA DB.

 ECC is just an operations engine.  S/4 HANA is a combination of
OLTP+OLAP+Planning. It’s an operation
