TO LABORATORY SPILL
• 1- Notify others of the spill.

• 2- Change PPE – do not track spill around the laboratory

• 3- Clean spill from outside-in.

• 4- Allow appropriate contact time.

• 5- Log and report the incident.


SPILL CLEAN-UP ROUTINE
PROCEDURES
(OUTSIDE BIOSAFETY CABINET)

• 1- Have a complete biological spill kit ready to go


before you start the clean-up.

• 2- Initiate clean-up as soon as possible.


RESPONSE
1- DO NOT PANIC
2- Alert people in the immediate area of spill.
3- Remove contaminated clothing and leave area (evacuate).
4- Close the area, post a “DO NOT ENTER” sign, and allow agents to settle (~ 30
minutes).
5- Identify any agent’s specific issues.
6- Assess the degree of contamination and formulate a plan for the action required.
7- Assemble a spill response and cleanup team.
SPILL CLEAN-UP ROUTINE
PROCEDURES
1- Before re-entering the room to proceed with clean-up: don grown, gloves, shoe
covers, full covered face shield, N-95 if applicable ( PPE from spill kit).
2- Starting at the edges and working toward the center of the spill, cover the spill with
paper towels or other absorbent material.
3- Carefully pour disinfectant over the absorbent material and spill starting around the
edges and working toward the center.
Saturate the area with the disinfectant.
4- Allow sufficient contact time for the disinfectant to inactive all material in the spill,
15-30 minutes disinfection.
5- Use paper towels to wipe up spill, working from edges to the center

PROCEDURES (CONT.)
6- Use tongs/forceps to pick up sharp objects ( broken glass, etc.) that may puncture
gloves
7- Discard absorbent material in biohazard waste bag as you clean-up the spill.
8- Clean the spill area with fresh paper towels soaked in disinfectant. Thoroughly wet
the spill area and allow to disinfect for approximately 15-20 min.
9- Discard cleanup materials in biohazard bag in second biohazard bag. Secure outer
bag and disinfect by autoclaving (steam sterilization).
