BIOGRAPHY
Biography
• (1743-1826) Was an American politician, diplomat, architect, and farmer,
recognized as one of the Founding Fathers of the United States.

• In 1772, he married Martha Wayles Skelton, with whom he had six children.

• In 1776, he drafted the Declaration of Independence


• In 1790, he was appointed as the Secretary of State under President George
Washington.
• In 1800, he won the presidential election and became the third President of the
United States.
• After serving two presidential terms, he retired from politics in 1809
• He passed away on July 4, 1826, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of the
Declaration of Independence.

• He drafted the Declaration of Independence of the United


States in 1776
• He staunchly defended religious freedom and the separation
of church and state.
• He advocated for the gradual emancipation of slaves and the
abolition of slavery in his home state of Virginia.
• He strongly believed in the importance of education as a pillar
of a free and democratic society.

• Despite advocating for equality and individual rights, Jefferson owned
slaves throughout his life.
• There is evidence that Jefferson had an intimate relationship with one
of his slaves, Sally Hemings, and had children with her, yet he did not
publicly acknowledge these children.
• Despite his philosophical and rhetorical ideas about equality, Jefferson
also held racist and stereotypical views about people of African
descent
• Although Jefferson advocated for equality and individual rights, his
administration was involved in policies and treaties that dispossessed
Native Americans of their lands and subjected them to unfair
treatment.
