Mechatronic System Components
Control Systems
► Black box which is used to control its output
to some particular value or particular
sequence of values.
► Two basic form of control system :
 Open loop
 Closed loop
Open Loop Systems

Advantage Disadvantage
► Relatively simple ► Inaccurate (no
► Low Cost correction for error)
► Generally good
reliability
Closed Loop Systems

Advantage Disadvantage
► Relatively accurate ► More complex
► More costly
► Greater chance of
breakdown (greater
number of components)
Sequential Controllers
► It’sused when control are strictly ordered in
a time sequence.
 After step 1 is complete then step 2 starts.
 When step 2 is complete then step 3 starts, etc.
► This could be by sets of relays
 Such mechanical switches are now more likely
to have been replaced by microprocessor
 Such devices behaving like switches which are
user programmable.
Sequential Controllers
► Washing Machine System
Washing Machine System
Steps
► Pre-Wash cycle
 Opening valve to fill machine drum to required level
 Closing the valve
 Switching on the drum motor to rotate the drum for a
specific time
 Operating the pump to empty the water from the drum
► Main-Wash cycle
► Rinse cycle
► Spinning
The system operating sequence is called a program.
Microprocessor-based controllers
► Replacing the mechanical cam-operated
controllers
► Advantage : greater variety of programs
► PLC used for a microprocessor-based
controller which uses programmable
memory to store instructions and to
implement functions such as ;
 Logic, sequence, timing counting and arithmetic
To control events.

Floatless Level Controller
Automatic Water Supply and Drainage
Control
► Ideal for level control of any
conductive liquid
► Both general-purpose and panel-
use models available
► Incorporates an arrester for surge
and induced lightning protection
► Wide range of models: Long-
distance, high- and low-sensitivity,
two-wire, etc.
► LED indicator for quick operation
check
► Conforms to EMC/IEC standards
(61F-GP-N/-N8/-GPN-V50)
► UL/CSA approved (61F-GP-N8/-
GPN-V50)
Operating Principle
operate the pump
In practice, with only two electrodes, ripples on the surface
of the liquid cause the Controller to jump and start,
shortening pump (and other equipment) life. This problem
can be solved by adding another electrode to form a self-
holding circuit. The additional electrode, E2, is connected in
parallel with E1, as shown
