DAY,
EVERYONE!!!
Basic GEOMETRIC
CONSTRUCTION
Quarter 3
Week 4
Objective:

 uses a compass and

straightedge to bisect line
segments and perpendiculars.
Warm up
activity:
Observe the sketches of a human face below.
Do you see the transition of the drawing from an
incomplete sketch to a recognizable face?
Questions to
answer:

1. Based on the sketches, how can you describe the lines (or
segments) used to sketch a face?

2. What is the purpose of those lines?

Lesson
1:

HOW TO BISECT
SEGMENTS
Straight edge Compass
In Geometry, bisection is the division
of something into two congruent parts
usually by a line which is called a
bisector. The most familiar considered
types of bisectors are line segment and
angle bisector.
Line Segment Bisector
Line segment bisector divides line segment into
two equal parts.

ACTIVITY
1:
How to bisect a segment
Task: Construct the bisector of (JK)

J K
PROCEDURE
Step 1: Set-up your
compass such that
the tips cover
slightly more than
half the length of JK.
At point J, draw an
arc as shown,
Step 2: Usingthe
same set-up of
the compass, at
point K , repeat
STEP 1.
Step 3: Connect
the points of
intersection of
the two arcs.
Name this
segment LN
(LN ).
Step 4: Name the point
of intersection of JK
and LN as point M.
Point M is called
the midpoint.
Thus, JM = MK
LESSON
2:
HOW TO
CONSTRUCT
PERPENDICULARS
Perpendicular lines are
intersecting lines that form right
angles.
ACTIVITY HOW TO CONSTRUCT
3:
PERPENDICULARS
Using the construction
in activity 1, right angles . L
J K
are formed by the two
. . .
segments. This is the
L
same procedure to
. N
construct perpendicular
lines.
To show perpendicular
lines, extend the two
. L
segments to opposite K
J
directions. Affixing . .

arrowheads as shown in the L
figure. . N
