‘be Going to’ Vs ‘Will’
For Future Meaning
‘BE GOING TO’

 “I’m going to take some time off work this year.”  Previously planned
 “They are going to adopt a child.”  Previously planned

 “This team is playing so bad today. They’re going to lose!” Prediction based on evidence

 “I shouldn’t have eaten that much! I’m gonna throw up!” Prediction based on evidence

The condensed form of “going to” is “gonna”.


Note: When you say ‘gonna’, you don’t skip verb to be. You skip the preposition ‘to’.

We use “be going to” to describe:

-Planned future events


-Predictions based on knowledge or evidence.

 “I’m thirsty! I think I will buy a drink.” spontaneous decision
 “I will keep your secret.” promise
Expressions like:
 “I won’t pay for damages if you drive recklessly.” threat - I think

 “Will you buy a hamburger for me? Thank you!” request - I’m sure
- I believe
 “I will help you with your luggage, it looks heavy!” offer often come before
