PROJECTILE MOTION
LAUNCHED AT AN ANGLE
LEARNING
OBJECTIVES
Investigate the Relationship between the
angle of release and the height and range of a
projectile.
WHAT IS PROJECTILE MOTION?
Speed of release aspect in projectile motion is speed in which the object is released from object applying force to it.Speed
of release is highly vital to most badminton shots to attain required effect.Speed of release is calculated by dividing
distance travelled by time taken to travel the distance.Speed of release in the image above is 30.67 metres per second, or
110 kilometres per hour - not uncommon for new player. For defensive clear the speed of release is moderate - point of a
defensive clear is to go far while giving time to get into position for another shot.To improve shot speed of release must be
faster - means that more power should be put into shot.Speed for this clear however was not enough and did not reach the
back corners as desired.
HEIGHT OF RELEASE
• Height of release is the height from the ground that the object is launched. All badminton shots require correct height of release to
be effective.Height of release "Affects the trajectory of the projectile and, for a given speed of release and angle of release, the
horizontal displacement increases as the height of release increases" (Oxford, 2015).Height of release in image below is 281.21
centimetres. release point of this height results in a longer distance due to the extra air time given to the shuttlecock.
• Makes the height of release aspect of this defensive clear effective.
• Only slight improvements that can be made would be a straighter arm to completely maximize height of release.
HEIGHT OF RELEASE
Angle of release is the measurement of the angle as the object leaves the outside force acting on it.Correct angle of release is vital to
maximizing effectiveness of many different shots in badminton.Optimum angle of release for most objects is around forty five degrees or
sometimes less.As most implements in sport are released at a height above the ground, the optimum angle at release is somewhat less than 45
degrees" & that "The actual ideal release angle can depend on the technique and physical attributes of the athlete" (Wood, 2010).Image below
shows an attempted defensive clear. Ideal defensive clear "Has a high and deep trajectory" (Badminton Information, 2012)Ideal angle of a
defensive clear slightly less than 45 degrees. To improve clear shot angle of release would need to be increased from 32 degrees to at least 40 to
42 degrees to become an effective clear (Badminton Information, 2012).
