PROJECTILE MOTION AND PHSYICS IN

BADMINTON
PROJECTILE MOTION
LAUNCHED AT AN ANGLE
LEARNING
OBJECTIVES
Investigate the Relationship between the
angle of release and the height and range of a
projectile.
WHAT IS PROJECTILE MOTION?

PROJECTILE MOTION IS WHEN AN OBJECT MOVES IN A

BILATERALLY CURVED PARABOLIC PATH. THE PATH
THAT THE OBJECT FOLLOWS IS CALLED ITS
TRAJECTORY. PROJECTILE MOTION ONLY OCCURS
WHEN THERE IS ONE FORCE APPLIED AT THE
BEGINNING, AFTER WHICH THE ONLY INFLUENCE ON
THE TRAJECTORY IS BECAUSE OF GRAVITY.
Angle of Projection - The angle between initial velocity of an object from horizontal plane
through which the object is thrown.
Maximum Height- The highest peaked reached by projectile after it launched.
Range - horizontal distance covered by projectile.
Time of Flight - time taken to reach the peak/highest point of the height.
Total Time of Flight - Time taken to reach the peak from the starting point to the ending point.

Learning Objectives

To identify and explain the three aspects of

projectile motion: angle of release, height of
release and speed of release while using them to
analyze and give points to improve a clear shot in
badminton.
SPEED OF RELEASE

Speed of release aspect in projectile motion is speed in which the object is released from object applying force to it.Speed
of release is highly vital to most badminton shots to attain required effect.Speed of release is calculated by dividing
distance travelled by time taken to travel the distance.Speed of release in the image above is 30.67 metres per second, or
110 kilometres per hour - not uncommon for new player. For defensive clear the speed of release is moderate - point of a
defensive clear is to go far while giving time to get into position for another shot.To improve shot speed of release must be
faster - means that more power should be put into shot.Speed for this clear however was not enough and did not reach the
back corners as desired.
HEIGHT OF RELEASE

• Height of release is the height from the ground that the object is launched. All badminton shots require correct height of release to
be effective.Height of release "Affects the trajectory of the projectile and, for a given speed of release and angle of release, the
horizontal displacement increases as the height of release increases" (Oxford, 2015).Height of release in image below is 281.21
centimetres. release point of this height results in a longer distance due to the extra air time given to the shuttlecock.
• Makes the height of release aspect of this defensive clear effective.
• Only slight improvements that can be made would be a straighter arm to completely maximize height of release.
HEIGHT OF RELEASE

Angle of release is the measurement of the angle as the object leaves the outside force acting on it.Correct angle of release is vital to
maximizing effectiveness of many different shots in badminton.Optimum angle of release for most objects is around forty five degrees or
sometimes less.As most implements in sport are released at a height above the ground, the optimum angle at release is somewhat less than 45
degrees" & that "The actual ideal release angle can depend on the technique and physical attributes of the athlete" (Wood, 2010).Image below
shows an attempted defensive clear. Ideal defensive clear "Has a high and deep trajectory" (Badminton Information, 2012)Ideal angle of a
defensive clear slightly less than 45 degrees. To improve clear shot angle of release would need to be increased from 32 degrees to at least 40 to
42 degrees to become an effective clear (Badminton Information, 2012).
WHAT IS BADMINTON

Badminton is a sport where players score points by striking

a shuttlecock with their racquet so that it passes over the
net and lands in their opponents' half of the court. It
involves various aspects of physics, such as aerodynamics,
projectile motion, kinetic/potential energy, etc.
PHYSICS IN BADMINTON
TERMS
DRAG - FRICTION BETWEEN A SOLID OBJECT MOVING
THROUGH EITHER LIQUID OR GAS, WHICH OPPOSES THE
MOTION OF THE OBJECT.
MOMENTUM - THE TENDENCY OF AN OBJECT TO MOVE IN ITS
DIRECTION OF TRAVEL.
TENSION - A REACTION FORCE APPLIED BY A STRETCHED
STRING ON THE OBJECTS WHICH STRETCH IT
VELOCITY - RATE OF CHANGE OF POSITION ALONG A STRAIGHT
LINE WITH RESPECT TO TIME
SHUTTLECOCK
A SHUTTLECOCK IS A HIGH-DRAG PROJECTILE WITH AN
OPEN CONICAL SHAPE. THE CONE IS FORMED FROM
SIXTEEN OVERLAPPING FEATHERS EMBEDDED INTO A
ROUNDED CORK BASE.PLASTIC(NYLON) SHUTTLES ARE
OFTEN USED TO REDUCE THEIR COSTS AS FEATHERED
SHUTTLES BREAK EASILY.

RACKETS

Badminton rackets are lightweight, composed of many different materials ranging

from carbon fire composite to solid steel. These racquets are made to make agile
swings with flexibility and mass to allow momentum and tension to produce
various shots.
PHYSICS IN RACKET
• TENSION OF THE RACQUET IS CRUCIAL IN BADMINTON. THE ELASTICITY AND
FLEXIBILITY OF THE STRINGS HELP WITH SPEED OF THE SHOT. THIS BOUNCY
EFFECT CAN HELP IN TERMS OF SPEED, BUT SOME PLAYERS FIND IT MORE
DIFFICULT IN CONTROLLING SHOTS, AS THE EXTRA BOUNCE IS SOMETIMES
HARD TO CONTROL. A HIGHER TENSION OF STRINGS RESULTS IN FASTER AND
QUICKER CONTROL IN SHOTS. WHILE LOWER TENSION RESULTS IN A BOUNCIER
SHOT (MORE ELASTICITY)FOR THE SWING OF THE RACQUET, THE MOMENTUM
HAS TO BE SUFFICIENT TO OVERCOME DRAG, WHICH IS WHY BADMINTON
RACQUETS ARE THIN AND LIGHT. THIS ALLOWS PLAYERS TO SWING WITH
GREATER VELOCITY. THE DESIGN OF THE BADMINTON RACQUET WAS CREATED
MAINLY SO PLAYERS CAN SWING WITH MORE SPEED AND TO HAVE ENOUGH
MOMENTUM TO COUNTER DRAG AND HIT THE SHUTTLE FAST.
