What is alternative assessment?

 Alternative assessment refers to procedures and techniques which can


be used within the context of instruction and can be easily
incorporated into the daily activities of the school or classroom"
(Hamayan, 1995, p. 213).

 Uses activities that reveal what students can do with language,


emphasizing their strengths instead of their weaknesses

 Is performance based, it helps instructors emphasize that the point of


language learning is communication for meaningful purposes

 Types of alternative assessment are conferences and interviews


What is conference?
 Standard part of a process approach to teaching writing such as journals
and teacher’s comments after writing an essay.

 Conferences are formative, not summative

 Conference is for the purpose of giving and offer positive washback

 One-on-one interaction between teacher and pupils

 Teacher gives direct feedback toward a pupil’s specific needs

 Teacher plays the role of a facilitator

 Teacher encourages self-reflection and improvement


Types of conference that the teacher usually used..

 - Commenting on drafts of essay and reports

 - Facilitates the improvement of the written work

 - Giving feedback on the result of performance on a test

 - Exploring strategies for improving pupil’s performance

 - Checking a pupil’s self-assessment of a performance

 - Setting personal goals for the future

 - Assessing general progress in a course


Examples :
What is interview?
 Teacher interviews a pupil for a designated assessment purpose
 Teacher can have an interview session such as informal
conversations which need little or no preparation
 Teacher have to construct the questions for interview session
carefully to maintain the reliability and make sure that the
questions are focused on the purpose of assessment
Goals to conduct interview

 Teacher assesses the pupil’s oral production


 Teacher ascertains a pupil’s needs before designing a course or
curriculum
 Teacher seeks to discover a pupil’s learning style and
preferences
 Teacher asks a pupil’s to assess his or her own performance

 Teacher requests an evaluation of a course


Guidelines for interview
1. Begin with friendly, like small talk with the pupil

2. Use relatively simple questions at the beginning of the session

3. Continue with level check and probe question which is more difficult according to
the stage

4. Ask simple and direct questions

5. Avoid combine objectives in the same questions, separate the topic for each
questions

6. Be prepare to repeat the questions if the pupil have the difficulty to understand it

7. Close the session with friendly comments
