Development Length
In Beams

Prepared by,
Swaraj B P
What Does The Typical Reinforcement
Detail Say ?.
• The development length “Ld” should be given from the face of the column for beam
top bars and “Ld/3” for beam bottom bars at column beam junctions. (See Figure 1)
• “Ld/3” For both top and bottom bars at the wall beam junction. (See Figure 2)

Figure 1 Figure 2
What Was the issue ?.
While considering the bottom reinforcement cutting length, if we consider "Ld/3",
the anchorage length was inadequate.

Ex : Let the Column size 600 * 600 mm and the bar dia 16mm.

Our actual "Ld/3" will be (45*16)/3 = 240 mm.

The contractor felt that it was insufficient for anchorage and sought structural
consultant advice.
Solution From Structural Consultant !!!

Structural consultant advised to continue the bar till column outer face and
provide the L bed of 150 mm For all the bars
Mail Confirmation From Structural
Consultant
How Contractor Has Claimed ?.
In all The Column beam Junction contractor has claimed Ld for all the top bars
which was causing the increase in the cutting length

Ex : Let Column Size is 600 * 600 mm , And Dia of Top bar is 25 mm

As per the typical reinforcement details Ld will become

45 * 25 = 1125 mm
But as per structural consultant confirmation
600 + 150 -25 - 50 = 675 mm

Difference in length = 1125 - 675 = 450mm per each bar.

Cost Impact / Savings
Since the same has been considered in both Main bars and extra bars as well in
all the floors the quantity was increased by 3.18 MT.

Contractor Claimed Quantity = 174.16 MT

Final Quantity After This Correction = 170.98 MT

Total Quantity saved is 3.18 MT For All floor Beams (B+G+5+T)

Total savings = 3.18 MT * 70000
