Simple Past Tense

The simple past tense is used


to talk about a completed
action in a time before now or
in the past.
Regular verbs and Irregular verb
 A.
For regular verbs you only put -
ed at the end of the word. For
example :

 Walk – walked
 Talk – talked
 Try – tried
 Study - studied
B. For irregular verbs, they
can be changed. For
example :

Go – went
Do – did
See – saw
Eat - ate
Verbal Sentence

 1. Affirmative
Sentence
 Subject + Verb 2 + Object/Complement
 Example:

- John went to the market yesterday.

- We washed the dishes this morning.


 2. Negative Sentence
 Subject + did not + Verb 1 + Object/Comp
 Example :

 Mark didn’t do his homework last night.

 We didn’t talk to each other two days


ago.
 3. Question Sentence
 Did + Subject + Verb 1 + Object/Comp ?

 QuestionWord + did + Subject + Verb 1 +
Object/comp?
Example :

 Did Eric send the e-mail last week?


 What did you do yesterday evening ?
Nominal Sentence:
 1. Affirmative Sentence

Subject + Was / Were+ Comp



 Example:

 Jessie
was happy yesterday.
 They were here last night.
 2. Negative Sentence

 Subject + Was / Were + not + Comp



 Example :

 Tim was not at home yesterday.


 They were not disappointed last night.
3. Question Sentence

 Was / Were + Subject + Comp?



 Example :

 Was Jackie sad last week?
 Were they in the hospital yesterday?
