Atelectasis (Collapse)

Atelectasis (Collapse)
• Incomplete expansion of the lungs (neonatal
atelectasis) or collapse of previously in-flated
lung, producing areas of airless pulmonary
parenchyma

• Adult atelectasis - Types

– Resorption (or obstruction)
– Compression
– Contraction
Resorption atelectasis
• Due to complete obstruction of
an airway with resorption of air

• Lung volume is diminished, the

mediastinum shifts toward the
atelectatic lung

• Causes
– Excessive secretions (mucous
plugs)
• Chronic bronchitis
• Bronchial asthma
• Bronchiectasis

– Obstruction by tumor
Compression atelectasis

• Pleural effusion, pneumothorax –

compression of lung

• Mediastinum shifts away from

the affected lung
Contraction atelectasis

Local or generalized fibrotic

changes in the lung or pleura
prevent full expansion
