TORSIONAL

STRESS

WEEK 9 LECTURE

Engr. Alexander B. De Lara

TORSION

The component of the resultant couple that tends to twist (rotate) the bar is called the twisting moment
or torque.

In many engineering applications, members are required to carry torsional loads.

Consider the torsion of circular shafts. Because a circular cross section is an efficient shape for
resisting torsional loads.
SHAFTS

Shafts are mechanical components, usually of circular cross-section, used to transmit power/torque
through their rotational motion. In operation they are subjected to:

• Circular cross sections remain plane (do not warp) and perpendicular to the axis of the shaft.
• Cross sections do not deform (there is no strain in the plane of the cross section).
• The distances between cross sections do not change (the axial normal strain is zero).

PROBLEM 1

Calculate the minimum diameter required in a solid steel shaft if it must not twist through more than
3° in a 6-m length when it is subjected to a torque value of 12 kN.m. What is the maximum shearing
stress developed? Use G = 83GPa.
PROBLEM 2

A 5 ft long steel shaft that has a diameter of 3 in will be subjected to a torque with a value of 13 kip-ft.
Compute for the maximum shearing stress and the angle of twist. For this problem, use G = 12x106
psi.
PROBLEM 3

Compute for the maximum torque that can possibly be applied to a hollow circular steel shaft of 90-
mm outside diameter and an 80-mm inside diameter without exceeding a shearing stress of 50 MPa or
a twist of 0.5 deg/m using G = 83 GPa.
PROBLEM 4

Figure shows a 2-in.-diameter solid steel cylinder that is built into the support at C and subjected to the
torques TA and TB. (1) Determine the maximum shear stresses in segments AB and BC of the cylinder;

and (2) compute the angle of rotation of end A. Use G = 12x106 psi for steel.
PROBLEM 5

The four rigid gears, loaded as shown, are attached to a 2-in.-diameter steel shaft. Compute the angle
of rotation of gear A relative to gear D. Use G = 12x106 psi for the shaft.
