Etymology - “Disaster”
The word “Disaster” is derives from 16th centaury French word “Désastre”
“Désastre” comes from Ancient Greek words
(δυσ) Des = Bad or Evil and
(ἀστήρ) Astre = Star
Hence, Disaster was implying loss or damage occurring due to some unfavorable star.
To a Layman DISASTER is

distressing nature
A sudden or great misfortune
Mishap or misadventure
A calamity
Introduction
Any occurrence that causes damage, ecological disruption, loss of human life,
deterioration of health and health services on a large scale and extraordinary response
from outside the affected community or area.(WHO)
Response: Initial actions taken as the event takes place. It involves efforts to
minimize the hazards created by a disaster.
o Examples: evacuation; search and rescue; emergency relief.
Recovery: Returning the community to normal. Ideally, the affected area should
be put in a condition equal to or better than it was before the disaster took place.
o Examples: temporary housing; grants; medical care.
