IS:875 (Part 3) - 1987

A Commentary on Indian Standard Code of practice

for design loads
(other than earthquake)
For buildings and
structures Part 3 Wind Loads
(Second Revision)
CONVERSION OF WIND SPEED FROM m/sec TO mile/Hrs

1m/sec = 2.2369miles/Hrs
39X2.2369 = 87.239 miles/Hrs
CONVERSION OF WIND SPEED TO FORCE
(speed in miles/Hrs)2 X 0.0027 = FORCE IN lbs/sq ft
(87.239)2 X 0.0027 = 20.548 lbs/sq ft
Conversion of lbs/sq ft to kgf/m2
1 kgf/m2 = 0.20 lbs/sq ft

20.548 lbs/sq ft = 20.548/ 0.20 = 102.74 kgf/m2

3.2  Wind Load

Wind pressures for design of all masts and determination of spans
are based on IS: 875-1964 – “Code of Practice for Structural Safety
of Buildings – Loading Standards”  Vide an amendment issued in
1971 to this specification, wind pressures for structures of height less
than 30 m were reduced by 25% Accordingly the standard wind
pressures adopted are as follows for all new works for different
zones as indicated in the specification:

i)  Green zone (light)                     -75    kg/m2
ii) Yellow zone (medium)             -112.50         kg/m2
iii) Red zone (heavy)                     -150 kg/m2

25 Right Stagger = 0.200 mtr

1 Weight of OHE /m = 1.6259 kg/m
or 1.60 kg/m
If both side span length is not same
so weight of OHE/m X ( L span/2 + R span/2)
Span length (L) = 72 mtr
Span length (R) = 72 mtr

1 Weight of OHE = 1.6259 X 72 =117.06 Kgs

Weight of Bracket = 60 kg
Half weight is considered with mast & half with OHE
2 Weight of Bracket = 30 kg

Weight of Artisan = 60 kg
weight is considered with mast only

3 Weight of Artisan = 60 kg
Total vertical load = Wt of OHE
+ Wt of bracket
+ Wt of Artisan
1 Weight of OHE = 1.60 X 72 =117.06 Kgs
2 ½ Weight of Bracket = 30 kgs
3 Weight of Artisan = 60 kgs
A. Total vertical load (P)
= 117.06 + 30 + 60 = 207.06 say 207 Kgs
W = MAST WEIGHT + ½ BRACKET WEIGHT + VERTICAL LOAD (P)

W = MAST WEIGHT
+ ½ BRACKET WEIGHT

W= 356.25+30+207
= 593.25 Kgs

Wind load on catenary/ mtr
= 2/3 portion X Dia of catenary X wind pressure
5% extra due to dropper must be considered
=1.05 X 2/3 X 0.01050 X 112.5
Hence for 72 m of catenary
Wind load on catenary
= 1.05 X 2/3 X 0.01050 X 72 X 112.5
=59.535, Say 59.54
Wind load on Contact/ mtr
= 2/3 portion X Dia of contact X wind pressure
5% extra due to dropper must be considered

Hence for 72 m of catenary
Wind load on Contact
= 1.05 X 2/3 X 0.01224 X 72 X 112.5
=69.4008, Say 69.40
Wind load on Mast

= 0.152 X 112.5 X 8.15
=139.365
Say 139.37 Kgs
Radial tension on Tangent Track
Since catenary is at centre line of the track.
Hence the radial tension of catenary is zero.

say 559 kgm
Due to wind load on Mast

Say 568 Kgm

Actual stress in the mast in axial compression
6ac.cal = ∑V/A where ∑ V Axial load on mast &
A is Cross sectional area as per chart
Actual stress in the mast in axial compression
6ac.cal = ∑ V/A = 539.25/47.4 =11.376
say 11.38
6actual/6ac with wind = 11.38/334= 0.03407<
0.15
Actual bending compression stress about xx axis
6 bcx.cal = Mxx/Zxx (Section modulus) = 2108/258.9 =
8.142 say 8.14, hence 8.14 X 100 = 814 kg/cm2
Actual bending compression stress about yy axis
6 bcy.cal = Myy/Zyy = 160/91.7 = 1.744
hence 1.74 X 100 = 174 kg/cm2
Since the ratio of 6ac.cal/ 6ac is less than
0.15 hence as per clause 7.1.1 (a) of IS 800-
1984
6ac.cal/ 6ac + 6 bcx.cal/ 6 bcx + 6 bcy.cal / 6 bcy <=1.0
OR 11.38/334 + 814/ 1538 + 174/2242
OR 0.03407 + 0.5292 + 0.07760
OR 0.64087
Since 0.64087< 1 Hence Safe
