Critique Paper Writing

General Instructions:
• Encode or write (can be handwritten) your critique on a long bond paper
(8.5”x13), bookman old style, font 12, 1” margin on all sides.
• Fasten your output on a brown or morocco folder
• Be sure to make it clean
• No two students shall have same answers otherwise both papers shall be returned
to them.
• Submit the output on or before the deadline.
• Answers should be in PARAGRAPH FORM
• Number of pages: Minimum of three (3) maximum of five (5)
• Follow the format below
I. Summary
• An introduction that includes either a thesis
or a premise from which your thesis will
later emerge
• A middle section in which you give a brief
synopsis of the book and develop your
arguments
• Brief conclusion
Critique the following:
II. Content
• Consider the topic and the way the topic is
developed (clarity, sufficiency of its
argument, its scope, subcategories, amount
and type of examples, anecdotes, evidence,
etc.)
III. Organization
• Consider how the essay is introduced and concluded
(especially looking for a “frame” to the essay, where
the intro and conclusion refer to the same idea)
• Find out where the thesis statement is located in the
most helpful place (direct or implied)
• Consider how the essay is structured (clear topic
sentences, appropriate and concrete evidence, logical
organization of evidence).
IV. Style
• Style can refer to the overall style of an essay: whether is
appropriate (humorous, serious)
• Style can also refer to the style of individual sentences:
whether you use a variety of sentences styles and lengths
• Consider whether the sentences are worded clearly, and
whether word choice is interesting and appropriate
• Consider whether comparative or superlative degree of
adjective is used.
V. Questions to be answered while writing a
critique

• Comment on the approach used by the


author and explain its relevance to the paper
• Critique the structure of the given academic
text as regards to:
• Sentence construction
• Paragraph development
• Word choice
• Rate the academic text and tell why
you gave such rating.
