Purpose:
• To entertain, amuse or instruct.
• Also they are meant to inform, narrate, or tell the
reader about a real or fictional event that
happened , happens or will happen .
What is Narrative Writing?
• A narrative is a story which contain specific
elements that work together to create an
interest not only for the author also for the
reader.
Types of narratives
CHARACTERISTICS
•The people, animals, or inanimate objects who are
affected by the actions of the plot or who are the
cause of certain events. The characters, real or
imaginative, should be
brought to life through the
narrative.
If a character is not
described well, the story
will not be believable.
Elements of Narrative Writing
PLOT
• The questions who, what, where,
when, why, and how that gives
the narrative direction.
• What is the story about?
• Events unfold as they happen.
• The frame of the narrative.
Plot Structure of Narrative Writing
• Beginning.

• Middle.
Plot Structure of Narrative Writing

• Climax.

• End.
Generic Structures of
Narrative Text
It is divided into four parts
• 1) Orientation.

• 2) Complication.

• 3) Resolution.

• 4) Re-orientation.
Orientation
Sets the scene: where and when the story happened and introduces
the participants of the story: who and what is involved in the story.
(Establecer la escena : dónde y cuándo sucedió la historia e introducir
los participantes de la historia : quién y qué es lo que esta implicado
en la historia.)

Thomas was bored. His mother was planting tomatoes in the back
garden, and Daisy, the dog, was snoring loudly underneath the kitchen
table. He had no one to play with and nothing to do. Suddenly he felt
very hungry. He opened the pantry and looked inside. He spotted a
box of chocolates on the top shelf.
Complication
Tells the beginning of the problems which leads to the crisis (climax) of the
main participants.
(Dice el comienzo de los problemas que conduce a la crisis (clímax) de los
protagonistas.)

After dragging the stool across the kitchen floor, climbing up, reaching high
with arms outstretched, he still couldn't grab it. He ran to get the broom. He
climbed up on to the stool, held the broom high and balanced carefully as
he poked it towards the top shelf He watched in horror as the broom
knocked other things off leaving the chocolates sitting alone on the shelf
Glancing down, he saw the tomato sauce sliding out of its bottle and
spraying on to the floor.
Resolution
The problem (the crisis) is resolved, either in a happy ending or in a sad
(tragic) ending.
(El problema ( la crisis ) se resuelve, ya sea en un final feliz o en un final
triste ( trágica ) )

As he picked up the containers, he wondered how he was going to clean up


the mess At that moment Daisy sprang into action. She crunched up the
biscuits, slurped up the sauce and swallowed the raisins. In just a few
seconds the floor was spotless Thomas turned to see his mother watching
her hands at the kitchen sink. "Would you like hamburgers for lunch?" she
asked l'I think I've lost my appetite.' said Thomas slowly.
