HOUSING & RESIDENTIAL
ENVIRONMENT
• Housing includes physical structure,
surroundings & community services and
facilities.
• Human settlement : all places in which group
of people reside & pursue their life goals.
• Residential environment ( WHO) : The
physical structure that man uses & all
necessary services, facilities, equipment
needed for the physical and mental health
and the social wellbeing of the individual and
family.
Social Goals of Housing
1. Shelter.
2. Family life : Adequate space for basic
activities.
3. Access to community facilities.
Schools, health services etc.
4. Family participation in community life.
5. Economic stability.
Criteria for Healthful Housing
1. Healthful housing provides physical protection &
shelter.
2. Provides adequately for cooking, eating, washing
& excretory functions.
3. Constructed, designed, maintained & used to
prevent the spread of communicable diseases.
4. Provides protection from hazards of exposure to
noise and pollution.
5. Free from unsafe physical arrangements & from
toxic & harmful material.
6. Promotes social relationships and encourages
personal and community development.
HOUSING STANDARDS
1. Site : Elevated, accesses to street, away of dust,
noise & soil dry.
2. Set back : Open space all round house for light &
ventilation.
3. Floor : Easily washed, smooth and free from cracks.
4. Walls : Strong, low heat capacity, weather resistant
& smooth.
5. Height : 3 meters.
6. Rooms : 2 rooms .
7. Floor area : 50 c.ft at least / person.
8. Windows : 2 one meter above ground.
9. Kitchen and PRIVY.
10. Bathing, washing & water supply
Rural Housing
1. 2 living rooms.
2. Veranda.
3. Kitchen
4. Latrine.
5. Sanitary well.
6. Cattle sheds 25 feet away from house.
