OCEAN ACIDIFICATION

WHAT IS OCEAN
ACIDIFICATION
Ocean acidification is
the process in which
seawater becomes
more acidic because
of the excess
amount of carbon
dioxide, it is
absorbing from the
atmosphere.
2
• Because of the
excess CO2 , there is 3
a decline in the pH
level of seawater

• The pH level of sea

water has declined
from 8.2 to 8.1units
since industrial
revolution.

• 0.1 units of
decreased in the
level of pH does not
seem much, but it
represents 30%
increase in acidity.
FOLLLOWING ARE CAUSES OF OCEAN 4
ACIDIFICATION

• INDUSTRIALIZATION • IMPROPER LAND

MANAGEMENT

• BURNING OF FOSSIL • DISPOSAL OF WASTE

FEUSL
5

• Burning of Fossils Fuels & Industries

Both Release great Amount Of CO2
in the environment.

• The Amount Of CO2 In The Oceans Has

Increased By 40% Since The Pre-
Industrial Era.
DISPOSAL OF WASTE IN SEA WATER 6

• Disposal of wastes has been

a challenge to many
countries

• Countries that borders

seawater masses, they have
been quick on using ocean as
dumping grounds.

• Industrial & Agricultural waste

that have acidic compounds,
lower the pH level of seawater
7
IMPROPER LAND MANAGEMENT

• Agricultural may also contribute

to the problem of Ocean Acidity.

• It may happen especially when

the methods that are employed
by farmers are not suitable

• In short, if the land is poorly

managed, the water masses can
be hit by the impact of
acidifying soil and mineral
content.
EFFECT OF OCEAN ACIDIFICATION 8

• On Marine Ecosystem

• On Tourism

• On Economy
EFFECTS ON MARINE 9
ECOSYSTEM

• Marine ecosystem is highly

impacted by increase in the
levels of acid in the oceans.

• Oceanic Organisms of all

types are used to living
in their optimum water
pH conditions.

• Sudden increase in the

acidity level of the ocean
can result in death of
these organisms
10
EFFECTS ON
TOURISM

• Damaging marine ecosystems

& reducing biodiversity will
cause loss of popular tourist
destinations and attractions
such as coral reef.

• Harming fish populations,

leading to reduced fishing
and diving opportunities.
EFFECTS ON ECONOMY 11

• Decline in the seafood

production and loss of
livelihoods for fishing
communities.

• Potential loss of
important drug
compounds derived
from the ocean.

1) Cytarabine.
Imp. drugs
2) Vidarabine.
found in the
3) Ziconotide. OCEAN
4) Trabectedin.
SOLUTIONS TO OCEAN ACIDIFICATION 12

1) STRICT AND RELEVENT

REGULATIONS:

The first step towards fighting ocean acidification can be taken

through the ratification of legislation that can ensure that waste
handling, among other pollution-risk activities, is controlled.

2) CIVIL EDUCATION:

Government and international organizations can come up with some

platform where they educate common citizens on the risk imposed by
Climate change and Ocean acidification.
13
3) REDUCING THE CONSUMPTION OF CARBON-
ORIENTED ENERGY RESOURCES:

• CO2 emissions from fossil fuels can be reduced by reducing the

use of such fuels.

• Adopting the use of alternatives/renewable energy sources

can be the best available option.

• Diversification of energy sources such as the use of Solar and

Wind as the Alternative Energy Sources can significantly pay
off.
CONCLUSION 14

• Ocean acidification is a serious and growing problem that poses a great

threat to the health of our oceans, people, and the animals that are
dependent on them

• To address this issue, it is critical to take immediate steps to reduce

greenhouse gas emissions.

• It is crucial to address this issue to mitigate its harmful effects on marine

life and preserve the ocean’s vital role in regulating the Earth’s climate
and supporting human well-being.
