INTRODUCTION

• There are two types of structures in construction, that is the

load-bearing structure and framed structure. Load-bearing
structure is the load taken by the wall and transferred to the
soil and the framed structure refers to the load taken by the
beams, and columns and transferred to the footing and
foundation of the structure. I will share with you the difference
between load bearing structure and framed structure .
TYPES OF STRUCTURES :

 Load Bearing Structure:

 Framed Structure:

Composite Structure
LOAD BEARING STRUCTURE

In load bearing structure, each wall is a structural member and

weight of slab is carried by the walls, and transferred to the
foundation. Hence, below each wall, a foundation of increasing
thickness is provided. Due to this, the load is spreadover larger
area at the foundation level.
Suitability of Load Bearing Structure:
• (1) It is suitable for low cost housing.
• (ii) It is suitable for structure having low
height.
• (iii) It is suitable for houses in non-earthquake
zone.
• (iv) It is suitable where local construction
material is used in construction.
FRAMED STRUCTURE:
• The load is transferred to the ground by concrete elements like
beams, columns and foundations in the frame structure of the
building. The frame structure consists of a beam and a column.
• In this type of frame structure, the load coming from the building is
transferred The load is transferred from the beam to the column. And
the load is transferred from the column to the footing. In this way, the
load of the building is safely placed on the ground by footing in the
frame structure.
Suitability of framed structure:
(i) it is suitable for any type of foundation and
strata.
(Ii) it is suitable where more speed of work is
required.
(Iii) it is suitable in eathquake prone zone.
(Iv) it is suitable in construction of multistoryed
buildings.
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN LOAD BEARING STRUCTURE AND
FRAMED STRUCTURE
COMPOSITE STRUCTURE
• If part of a building has framed structure and part of it
has load bearing structure, then it is calledComposite
structure.
• Composite structure is mainly found when extension or
modification of existing building is done.
• It can also be built if some part is inaccessible or
inconvenient, to incorporate in the portal frame skeleton.
• This built-up part will be load bearing structure and the
resulting building is of composite structure.
