INTRODUCTION
Leucaena leucocephala, commonly known as
Ipil-Ipil, is a leguminous tree that is widely
cultivated in tropical and subtropical regions
around the world. It is a valuable plant in
agroforestry systems due to its ability to fix
nitrogen, provide shade, and produce high-
quality forage for livestock.
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
Leucaena leucocephala, commonly known as
Ipil-Ipil, is a leguminous tree species that is
widely distributed in the Philippines, India,
and Southeast Asia. It has been identified as a
valuable source of high-protein feed for
livestock, and as a potential source of biomass
for energy production. However, the hard seed
coat of Ipil-Ipil limits its germination, and
mechanical and chemical scarification
techniques have been proposed to overcome
AIM
• The aim of this study is to determine the effects of
mechanical and chemical scarification on the growth
and development of Ipil-Ipil in the college farm, Vom.
OBJECTIVES
• To determine the effects of mechanical and chemical
scarification on the growth and development of
leauceana leaucocaphala.
• To evaluate the growth performance of different
scarification method in species
• To investigate the growth performance vigoros
improvement of mechanical and chemical
scarification.
JUSTIFICATION OF THE STUDY
The study of the effects of mechanical and chemical
scarification on the growth and development of Ipil-
Ipil is important for several reasons. First, the hard
seed coat of Ipil-Ipil limits its germination, which can
reduce the overall productivity of the tree. Second,
Ipil-Ipil is an important source of high-protein feed
for livestock, and increasing its productivity through
scarification techniques can contribute to sustainable
agriculture in the region. Finally, the potential use of
Ipil-Ipil as a biomass source for energy production
further highlights the importance of optimizing its
growth and development.
MATERIALS
• Pot
• Sand paper
• wood
• Fire
• shape Knife
• Acid
• Water will be obtained from a borehole
and rainwater harvesting system.
EXPERIMENTAL SITE
The study will be conducted at the college
Farm, located in Vom, Nigeria. The farm is
situated on a flat terrain with well-drained soil,
and has a tropical climate with an average
annual rainfall of 1200 mm. The temperature
ranges from 20°C to 35°C, and the soil is a
sandy loam with a pH of 6.5.
PROCEDURE
• The experiment has six treatments, with three
mechanical treatments (T1, T2, and T3) and three
chemical treatments (T4, T5, and T6). Each
treatment will have three replicates, resulting in a
total of 18 experimental units.
