Types of Falls and Their Location – Design Principles of Sarda type Fall – Trapezoidal Notch Fall
and Straight Glacis Fall.

◦ The FSL of the canal can then be marked as to cover all the
commanded points, thereby deciding suitable locations for falls
in canal FSL, and hence in canal beds.
⚫ d/s well is necessary for falls greater than 1.8 m and for
discharges
greater than 0.29 cumec.
⚫ Very useful for affecting larger drops for smaller discharges.
⚫ Commonly used as tail escapes for small canals, or where high
levelled smaller drains do outfall into a low level bigger drain.

falls
⚫ Introduced in Sarda canal system in UP (required large nos of falls)
⚫ In that area, a thin layer of sandy clay overlaid a stratum of pure
sand.
⚫ The clear nappe leaving the crest is made to impinge into a
cistern below.
⚫ The cistern provides a water cushion and helps to dissipate the surplus
energy of the falling jet.

Crest Dimensions:
Clear width of crest.
Vertical falls should be full width falls, i.e., the width of the crest should be same as bed width of the canal
because increased intensity of discharge due to fluming creates scour on the downstream.
Unlike vertical falls the glacis falls can be flumed when combined with bridge so as to economize in the cost.
It k quite rational to select such (q) discharge per metre run of crest width which with the height of drop (HL)
available gives value of total energy on the d/s (Ef2) equal to F.S. depth of the canal. (It can be read from
Blench curves). It does not require deep cistern on d/s and avoids construction difficulty particularly when
subsoil water level is high. The throat width may be rounded off to next half metre. The fluming thus
calculated may not, however, exceed limits given below subject to the condition that overall width of fall crest
is not more than bed width of the canal on the downstream.
