The Subject, Verb & Object
- The subject, verb and object are three words that are used to describe 3 common
parts of a sentence (not parts of speech). E.G:
I ate food. Object: This is the thing that the action is happening to.
Verb: This is the same thing as the verb we saw last lesson.
Subject: This is the person or thing that is doing the action.
The Subject
- The subject is usually a noun or pronoun, that does the action.
- As we have already seen, the action is also called the verb. E.G: He climbed the
tree.
- In the sentence above, the word ‘he’ is the subject in the sentence. Can you
explain why? It is because they are doing the action.
Answers:
The Verb
- The verb is the same thing that we saw in one of our last lessons.

The Object
- The object, unlike the subject, is the thing that the verb is happening to.
- This does not mean that it is the thing that does the action, but the other way
around. E.G: I climbed the tree.
In the sentence above, the word ‘tree’ is the object of the sentence. Can you
explain why? It is because the tree is theAnswers:
thing that the verb is happening to.
The Passive Voice
- All of the sentences that we have seen are in the active voice.
- That means that it is the easier and more informal way of speaking.
- The passive voice swaps the sentence around, and makes it more formal.
- We will explain more about this later.
Task
- Your task is to tell me what parts of a sentence the underlined words below are.
- You can use the PowerPoint to help you.
- Are they a subject, verb or an object?
• I like rice.
• She loves her job.
• He’s eating an orange.
• Cats eat fish.
