HOLISTIC DIMENSIONS OF BIOPSYCHOSOCIAL
PROCESSES RELATED TO HEALTH AND WELLNESS

According to biopsychosocial concept of health, health is viewed

as a balance among biological, psychological and social sectors.
This concept promotes the idea of the ‘mind-body connection’
which highlights the interplay between physical and mental
processes in the case of illness, recovery and overall health.

Biopsychosocial model for COVID-19 Pandemic

 The 'bio' entity concerns with biological aspect and its
impact on health.

Ex:- Considering the pandemic of COVID-19, the disease's

causative agent is a lethal member of a large Coronaviruses
group called SARS-CoV-2 .

 The 'psycho' entity concerns psychological aspects such

as thoughts, emotions, or behaviors.

Ex:- Considering the COVID-19 disease, the quarantine and

the sudden change in lifestyle were the most significant
cause of the severe deterioration in the population's
psychological status . The continuation of quarantine
restrictions had a significant impact on the development of
anxiety into more complex emotions such as insomnia,
depression, boredom, and anger
 The 'social' entity concerns social aspects that might influence the
health of an individual, things like our interactions with others, our
culture,our economic status.
EX:- Considering the covid 19 disease most affected social groups were the poor and
those with low incomes, especially in countries that did not take adequate measures to
ensure food security during the pandemic . The elderly and people with chronic diseases
were more likely to contract the disease, and therefore it was difficult for them to cope
with isolation and the lack of interaction with others.

Conclusion
Bps concept does not believe that disease and illness is caused only because
of viruses or bacteria ,it promotes better psychological conditions and better
social interaction.
In conclusion, the study of the COVID-19 pandemic in its three dimensions
(bio-psych-social) helps develop an appropriate and effective strategy for
treating patients.
BIOPSYCHOSOCIAL MODEL OF IBS
HEALTH- Health means the absence of both physical and mental diseases.
WELLNESS- Wellness is the state of living a healthy lifestyle.
.

HOLISTIC HEALTH
Holistic health presumes to enlarge the traditional sphere of medical
('allopathic') concerns from a narrow, largely technical focus on
symptomatology and disease to a broadened domain including nutrition,
psychological and spiritual well-being, interpersonal relations and influences
from the environment.

• Illness is seen as an imbalance in the energy spheres of our emotional,

rational, spiritual, physical and social selves.
• Healing is concerned with the individual balancing of these energies.
HOW HOLISTIC HEALTH
DEVELOPED
• Ancient healing traditions, as far back as 5,000 years ago in
India and China, stressed living a healthy way of life in
harmony with nature.

• Socrates (4th century BC) warned against treating only one

part of the body “for the part can never be well unless the
whole is well.”

• Although the term holism was introduced by Jan Christiaan

Smuts in 1926 as a way of viewing living things as “entities
greater than and different from the sum of their parts,” it wasn’t
until the 1970s that holistic became a common adjective in our
modern vocabulary.
HOLISTIC DIMENSIONS OF
HEALTH AND WELLNESS

leads to the realization of one's full potential;
meaning and purpose of life; and happiness
from within.
HOLISTIC MEDICINE
 Holistic medicine is based on the belief that
unconditional love and support is the most powerful
healer and a person is ultimately responsible for his
or her own health and well-being.
 It aims to improve health and wellness through the
body,mind and soul.
 All people have innate healing powers.
 The patient is a person, not a disease.
 Healing takes a team approach involving the
patient and doctor, and addresses all aspects of a
person's life using a variety of practices.
 Treatment involves fixing the cause of the
condition, not just alleviating the symptoms.
Hahnemann and Holism
 Master Samuel Hahnemann can be truly considered as
the pioneer of holistic healing because the credit of
introducing the novel concepts of individualization and
totality of symptoms in to the service of ailing humane is
up on him.
 Hahnemann says homoeopathy is holistic approach only
when patients treated by –individualization
- totality of symptoms
-potentisation of medicine
“The organism is indeed the material instrument of the life, but it is
not conceivable without the animation imparted to it by the
instinctively perceiving and regulating vital force” as per the
aphorism 15.
 “The material organism, without the vital force, is
capable of no sensation, on function and no self-
preservation”

Aphorism 189 clearly says, “And yet very little reflection will
suffice to convince us that no external malady (not occasioned by
some important injury from without) can arise, persist or even
grow worse without some internal cause, without the co-
operation of the whole organism, which must consequently be in
a diseased state.
 Philosophy of homoeopathy believes that although
apparently a organ is diseased, but actually the man as a
whole is sick. The expression of the sickness is through
the organs. Hence, when a similimum is administered
which is most similar to the symptomatic totality of the
patient, it creates order and automatically the peripheral
organ which is suffering is also helped.

 According to Dr. J T KENT , sick comes before the person.

That is its not just the pathogens which acts as the cause.
The exact cause is the miasm which has evolved in him.
Miasm acts as the preliminary cause and make the person
susceptible towards the pathology. Other than the
symptoms revealed by patient, prior importance should be
given to tracing out the miasm evolved.
 According to Stuart Close, a human being is something more
than a miscellaneous assortment of eyes, ears, nose, throat,
lungs etc., which if left to the ordinary physicians, usually treat
as if they were independent of each other. They are only parts
of a very intricate machine. They are assembled according to a
wonderful plan made by the designer of the Universe for the
purpose of utilizing the divine power of life. Life flows through
them all and unites them into an organic whole.

Each part depends upon every other parts, and all act
together as one, in health or disease. When there is a disturbance
of this life principle, disease originates. One who knows how to do
these things never makes the mistake of treating a part as if it
stood alone. Before his eyes is always pictured the individual
patient- the case as a whole.
CONCLUSION
 Overall biological, psychological and social health includes
physical ,mental, social ,emotional and spiritual factors. These are
dimensions which in harmony called health and wellness.

 The biopsychosocial processes advocates for good mental and emotional

health to maintain a healthy life style.

 controlling our mental health as well as the effects society can have on
us,is in our hands and if successful,it can help in disease prevention .
Thus,it is cost effective ,as prevention is better than cure in many cases.

 We can conclude that the biopsychosocial approach to health and

healthcare is very beneficial in several situations.
