Biological source –
Family - Cannabinaceae
Chemical constituents -
It contains 15-20% of resin, which contain major
active principle 1,3,4 Tetra hydro cannabinol
( Commonly known as Δ THC)
The resin also contains cannabinol,
cannabidiol, cannabidiolic acid etc
Indian hemp seeds contains about 20% fixed
oil.
Uses –
1.Sedative
2. Narcotic analgesic
3.Hypnotic ( Induce sleep)
4. It has psychotropic properties due to 1,3,4
Tetra hydro cannabinol
5.Used as an antibacterial agent

3. Podophyllum
Synonym – Indian podophyllum
Biological source –
Family - Berberidaceae
Chemical constituents –
It contains 7-15% of resin known as podophyllin .
Roots contain more resin than the rhizomes.
The active principle in podophyllin resin is known
as podophyllotoxin(40%) in Indian variety , alpha
and β peltatins in the American podophyllum.
It also contains Quercetin , Kaempferol,
astragalin, essential oil
Uses –
Used in the treatment of cancer
Used as purgative
Used as bitter tonic

4. JALAP
Synonyms:
Radix Jalapae, Jalap root, Vera cruz or mexican
Jalap
Biological Source:
Jalap consists of dried tuberus roots or tubercles of
Ipomoea purga belonging to family
Convolvulaceae
Geographical source:
Obtained from Mexico, India, W. Indies and S.
Africa
Collection: Plant is perennial herb. It produce
thin horizontal slender runners. Adventitious roots
are produced from the nodes of the runners. Some
of the roots remain thin but some swell due to
storage of starch. These roots are collected after
the rainy season. Drug is dried artificially and
gains smoky odour.
Chemical Constituents:
Contain 8-12% glycoresins other constituents
are mannitol, sugar, Ipurganol, starch and
Ca.oxalate. Jalap contain ether soluble part
callled convolvulin and insoluble part julapin.
Uses:
Stimulate intestinal secretions, act as laxative in
small doses and purgative in large doses. It is
used as hydragogue.

5. IPOMOEA
Synonyms:
Radix Ipomoeae, Orizaba jalap root,
Mexican scammony root
Biological Source:
It consists of dried tuberus roots of Ipomoea
orizabensis belonging to family
Convolvulaceae
Geographical source:
Obtained from Mexico (Orizabs)
Collection: Ipomoea is perennial climber. It
produce large woody tuberous roots. Roots are
dug, washed , cut into slices and dried.
Chemical Constituents:
Contain 10-20% resins, Volatile oils and some
fatty acids. Resin have both ether soluble and
insoluble portions. Both contian jalapin, a acidic
glycoside. Jalapinolic acid and ipurolic acid and
convolvuliinic acids are present in this drug.
Uses: It is strong cathartic

6. COLOCYNTH
Synonyms:
Bitter apple, Fructus colocynthidis, colocynthis
Biological Source:
It is dried pithy pulp of ripe fruit of Citrullus
colocynthis belonging to family Curcurbitaceae
Geographical source:
Cultivated in Asia, Africa, S. Europe, syria,
cyprus, Egypt and India (Gujrat and Tamil
Nadu)
Collection:
It is perennial herb. Fruit is fleshy in nature and is
collected in autumn when it ripe. Fruit is yellow
in colour. Fruits are peeled using knife and
dried under sun or artificially.
