PHYSICS

TOPIC:PRESSURE IN LIQUID
IF YOU GO SWIMMING YOU CAN FEEL THE PRESSURE OF
THE WATER.YOUR EARS DETECT LIQUID PRESSURE.

• The particles in a liquid are very close together,so liquids cannot be compressed.
• We say that they are incompressible.
IT IS LIQUID PRESSURE THAT PRODUCES
UPTHRUST,THE FORCE THAT KEEPS THINGS AFLOAT.

• Liquid pressure at a point depends on the weight of water above it

• There is twice as much water above a point at the bottom of a lake than there is half way
down.
• The liquid pressure at the bottom of a lake is double the pressure half way down.
LIQUID PRESSURE AND DEPTH

• The pressure on a fish at the bottom of a lake is bigger than the

pressure on a fish half-down.
• This is why the bottom of a dam wall has to be many times thicker
than the top. The pressure at the bottom is much, much bigger.
• When people go deep underwater they use diving vessels or
submarines with very strong walls to withstand the pressure
• WITH A PRESSURE GAUGE
• This contains a tube that is curled up.The tube straightens out as the
pressure inside the tube increases. This moves a needle to show a
reading on a scale.
MEASURING PRESSURE

• The pressure in a liquid or gas is measured with a pressure gauge.

KEY POINTS
• Pressure in liquid result from the forces between
particles in the liquid acting over an area.
• Deeper in a liquid the pressure gets bigger because
there is a greater weight of water above you.
• You can measure liquid pressure with a pressure
gauge.
