Chapter 1
THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

This chapter presents the background and purpose of the study, theoretical framework, conceptual framework,
statement of the problem, hs of the study, scope and definition of terms.

Background and Purpose of the Study

Bullying is unwanted, aggressive behavior among school aged children that involves a real or perceived power
imbalance. The behavior is repeated, or has the potential to be repeated, over time. Both kids who are bullied and
who bully others may have

In order to be considered bullying, the behavior must be aggressive and include:

An Imbalance of Power: Kids who bully use their power—such as physical strength, access to embarrassing
information, or popularity—to control or harm others. Power imbalances can change over time and in different
situations, even if they involve the same people.
Repetition: Bullying behaviors happen more than once or have the potential to happen more than once
Bullying includes actions such as making threats, spreading rumors, attacking someone physically
or verbally, and excluding someone from a group on purpose.

There are two types of bullying: Verbal bullying is saying or writing mean things. Verbal
bullying includes:Teasing, Name-calling, Threatening to cause harm. Physical bullying involves
hurting a person’s body or possessions. Physical bullying includes:Hitting/kicking/pinching, Spitting,
Tripping/pushing, Taking or breaking someone’s things, Making mean or rude hand gestures.

Since time immemorial, the case of bullying was rampant to almost everywhere. One could have
experienced being bullied or the one who bully others. Farrington (1993) said: "Bullying is any
negative action, which may be physical or verbal, has hostile intent, is repeated overtime and
involves a power differential which could involve one or more perpetrators or recipients
Bullying is usually triggered by difference in physical appearance (Sweeting & West,
2011), elusive extroverted issues and inequality of access to power. Presently, the
occurrence of bullying is already dreadful more importantly among elementary and high
students. A recent study in Canada found out that among five thousand (5,000) children
who attend school, thirty-eight percent (38%) said that they have already experienced
bullying more than twice in their school life.

Olweus (1993) once said: "The background research plus several suicides due to bullying
led to a national intervention programme carried out in the mid- 80s, class and
individual aged were encouraged to adopt anti-bullying measures

The purpose of our study is for us to be aware what type of bullying is anyone
receiving from the others, and to also know why is bullying still existing in school
specially to the Grade 7 Students because we all know that when it comes to bullying
there will be an effect for every student, they can be traumatize, there's the building of
trust issues, it can cause them anxiety and depression that can lead to suicidal thoughts,
so it's better if we can know what are they going through.
Theoretical Framework

Bullying has become a national epidemic and the behavior  of bullying can be examined by looking at it through the
lens of Social Learning theory. According to the social learning theory as described in Berger,(2015) it's an extension of
behaviorism that emphasizes the influence that other people have over a person's behavior, stating that every person
learns through observation and imitating other people's behavior. This means the bullying behavior was learned by
his/her imitation of someone else or a group of other people. According to (Swearer, Wang, Berry & Myers, 2014)
Social learning theory also known as social cognitive theory can be used to explained aggressive bullying behaviors, for
example youth who are exposed to domestic  violence in the home are more likely to bully others than those who
aren't exposed to domestic violence and the same goes with children who socialize with aggressive peers: they are
more likely to show aggressive behaviors toward others than those who do not socialize with aggressive peers. It is
apparent that students who bully others are a result of what they see or what is being done to them. They are hurting
and the root is unresolved emotional issues from witnessing violence in their homes or from their peers or both.

On my own opinion bullying has become a big problem on the school or anywhere, even I became a victim of bullying
inside our school, being bullied by someone is really traumatizing, some got their trust issues build up, some of them
even attempted suicide because of their anxiety and depression. Bullying or being bullied is not a good type of joke, it
may be good for you but not for the person you bullied, try to put yourself in their situation and you might understand
them.
Conceptual Framework
Frame 1: Present the input composed of the profile of the respondents
using variables as name, sex and age.
Frame 2: Present the Process of the research
Frame 3: Present the output of the research
Statement of the Problem
1. What is the profile of the respondents in terms of name, sex, and age?
2. What are the effects of Physical Bullying to the grade 7 Students in terms of:?
2.1 Personality
2.2 Socializing
3. What are the effects of Verbal Bullying to the grade 7 Students?
           2.1 Personality
           2.2 Socializing
4. Why is there still bullying going on in the school?
Scope and Limitations
The scope of our study is to find out what type of bullying is anyone
experiencing from the others who bullied them, and also to know why
they are being bullied and what are the reasons they're being bullied
about. When it comes to limitations we only choose the two(2) most
common type of bullying in school which is Physical and Verbal bullying.
Bullying. It refers to a repeated aggressive behavior where one person or group of people in a position of power
Definition of Terms

deliberately intimidates, abuses, or coerces an individual with the intention to hurt that person physically or
emotionally.

Physical Bullying. It refers to the use of physical actions to intimidate and gain control over a target. The physical
actions are unwanted by the victim and can either cause damage to their body or possessions.

Hitting. It refers to one's hand or a tool or weapon into contact with (someone or something) quickly and forcefully.

Pinching. It refers to grip (something, typically someone's flesh) tightly and sharply between finger and thumb.
Spitting. It refers to eject saliva forcibly from one's mouth, sometimes as a gesture of contempt or anger.
Tripping. It refers to catch one's foot on something and stumble or fall.

Pushing. It refers to exert force on (someone or something), typically with one's hand, in order to move them away
from oneself or the origin of the force.
Kicking. It refers to a punishment or assault in which the victim is kicked repeatedly.

Taking or Breaking Someone's Things. It refers to a person taking something from someone and break it on purpose
Making Mean or rude hand gestures. It refers to someone doing something
like an inappropriate hand gestures towards another.

Verbal Bullying. It refers to someone, who is a bully, uses insulting or

demeaning language to mock, embarrass or insult another person.

Teasing. It refers to intending to provoke or make fun of someone in a

playful way.

Name-calling. It refers to calling someone with insulting or inappropriate

nickname.

Threatening to cause harm it refers to scaring someone that you’ll do

something bad to them.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This chapter presents the research design, setting of the study, subject of the study, sources of
data and procedure of the study.

Research Design

Quantitative research is the process of collecting and analyzing numerical data. It can be used to
find patterns and averages, make predictions, test causal relationships, and generalize results to
wider populations. (Bhandari, 2020)

Descriptive research design is a type of research design that aims to systematically obtain
information to describe a phenomenon, situation, or population. More specifically, it helps answer
the what, when, where, and how questions regarding the research problem rather than the why.
Setting of the Study
MV Montessori Integrated School is in the municipality of cardona
region 4A Calabarzon at present the school is under the supervision of
Mr. Eric Marco B. Villegas. MVMIS is composed of 1 preschool teacher,
5 elementary teachers, 7 highschool teachers and 5 non teaching staffs.

Procedure of the Study
In conducting this study, the researcher followed the process.

First, the researchers will prepare and present a title that will be approved by the research adviser..

Second, after the research adviser approved the improved and modified titles, the researchers advanced to the title
defense.
Third, after the approval of the title, the researchers will start making the first chapter of the study which consists of
the background and purpose of the study, theoretical framework, conceptual framework, statement of the problem, scope
and limitations, and definition of terms. Followed by the next chapter, the chapter 2 that presents the research design,
setting of the study, subject of the study, sources of data, procedure of the study.

Then the researchers will then craft questions to be answered by the respondents. After that, the constructed
questionnaire-checklist will be validated by the research adviser.

Then, the researchers will start gathering data. The gathered data will be analyzed and interpreted. After that, the
researchers will finalize the document and prepare for the final oral defense. Finally, the final document of the study will be
submitted.
